Chapter 7 - The Gown on the Floor

The wedding gown lay near the altar steps.
White fabric.
Beaded lace.
Long train twisted across the marble.
It had taken four assistants twenty minutes to fit it around Elise’s bruised body that morning.
She had not cried then.
Not when the zipper brushed a mark on her ribs.
Not when the seamstress avoided her eyes.
Not when Vanessa passed the dressing room door and smiled.
The gown was supposed to hide everything.
That was its real purpose.
Not beauty.
Containment.
Adrian wanted a perfect bride at a perfect altar inside an elite New York cathedral.
He wanted wealthy guests to see the wedding and believe the Blackwell name remained elegant, powerful, untouched.
Elise gave him the altar.
Then removed the lie.
Now the gown lay discarded, and her simple ivory slip became more honest than all the silk in the cathedral.
A guest in the back row stood suddenly.
His wife pulled him back down.
No one wanted movement mistaken for interference.
Detective Cole guided Adrian one step down from the altar.
He resisted slightly.
“Careful,” she said.
Her tone was calm.
A warning without performance.
Adrian obeyed.
The wealthy guests watched obedience settle over him like unfamiliar clothing.
Elise looked at the projection screen.
The silent footage still showed him beside the damaged luxury car.
A car her father had loved.
A car Adrian had claimed was unsafe because of age, then acted devastated when the crash happened.
She did not replay the recording.
Once was enough.
The words were already inside the walls.
I cut the brakes.
Her father was never meant to survive.
The recording did not mention Elise directly.
It did not need to.
The man who could say that about her father while marrying her beneath chandeliers had already told the cathedral what he was.
Vanessa whispered, “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
The investigator beside her turned his head slightly.
“What wasn’t?”
She froze.
Elise heard it.
So did Adrian.
His face tightened.
Another thread had appeared.
Detective Cole’s eyes moved to Vanessa.
“Please stay where you are.”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
No final arrest shown for her.
Not yet.

But the aisle narrowed around her.
