Chapter 4 - Vanessa at the Front Aisle

Vanessa had chosen her seat carefully.

Close enough to the altar to matter.

Far enough not to look involved.

Champagne-colored formal outfit.

Dark hair polished.

Hands folded neatly over her clutch.

She had watched the ceremony like a woman waiting for a contract to close.

Not a wedding.

A transfer of power.

When Elise first walked down the aisle, bruises hidden beneath her gown, Vanessa smiled faintly.

When Elise stopped at the altar and removed the gown, Vanessa’s smile died.

When the projection screen lit with the first silent footage, Vanessa’s hand tightened around her clutch.

When the memory card appeared, her face changed completely.

Now she stood blocked by an investigator, trapped in the aisle she had expected to walk out of unnoticed.

Elise looked at her.

Adrian noticed.

“Leave her out of this.”

The words came too fast.

Detective Cole looked at him.

“Why?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The guests heard the question and understood it mattered.

Why protect Vanessa now?

Why defend her before himself?

Why stop Elise from looking at her?

Vanessa opened her eyes and whispered, “Adrian, don’t.”

The investigator beside her looked down at her hands.

“Ma’am, keep them visible.”

Several guests gasped softly.

Vanessa slowly lifted both hands.

No one touched her.

No arrest shown yet.

No final accusation.

Only containment.

Elise remained still under the stained-glass light.

Her bruises did not make her look weak now.

They made every denial look violent.

Adrian turned toward her.

“You don’t know what you’ve done.”

Elise’s voice remained low.

“I know exactly what was done to my father.”

His face hardened.

The panic became rage.

For one second, the mask slipped again.

Then Detective Cole stepped slightly closer to him.

Adrian remembered the agents holding his arms.

Remembered the guests.

Remembered the recording.

Remembered the ring beside the evidence reader.

His rage shrank back into fear.

The projection screen still showed silent footage of him near the damaged car.

No readable timestamp.

No captions.

Just image.

His body beside the vehicle.

His own voice in everyone’s memory.

Vanessa stared at the screen and began to tremble.

Elise watched her.

Not with hatred.

With terrible understanding.

There were people who committed harm.

May you like

And there were people who stood close enough to benefit from it.
