Chapter 3

Evan did not open the envelope.

Not because he did not want to.

Because Rachel looked as if the paper might explode if the seal broke in public.

He held it carefully between two fingers, staring at the old crease, the cream paper, the faint pressure mark where someone had once sealed it.

No readable text.

No revealed contents.

Just a piece of the past suddenly lying between him and the woman he had never stopped seeing in other people’s faces.

“Rachel,” he said, voice lower now, “I never sent you this.”

Her laugh came out broken.

“You don’t even know what it says.”

“I know I didn’t tell you not to contact me.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You don’t get to erase what I lived through.”

That landed.

Evan looked down.

Inside the stroller, one baby sucked quietly on a pacifier. Another kicked her little feet. The gray-eyed girl kept watching him with unsettling calm.

Three babies.

Not newborns.

Not infants fresh from some recent secret.

Old enough to have lived birthdays he missed.

Old enough to have cried for teeth, taken first steps, reached for faces, learned voices.

Old enough for him to have lost more than months.

His throat tightened.

Noelle stepped closer again, perfume sharp in the spring air.

“Evan, this is clearly some kind of ambush.”

Rachel looked at her for the first time.

An ambush.

Standing on a public sidewalk with three babies, a diaper bag, and a stroller too wide to move through café chairs without apologizing.

Rachel’s tired eyes narrowed.

“You think I planned to run into him while buying wipes?”

Noelle’s smile tightened.

“I think timing can be very convenient.”

Evan turned toward her.

“Stop.”

Noelle blinked.

The single word shocked her more than anger would have.

Evan looked back at Rachel.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Rachel’s face changed.

There it was.

The question she had feared most because the answer made her sound weak, and she had spent four years becoming anything but.

“I did,” she said quietly.

Evan went still.

Rachel swallowed.

“Once. After the letter. Your number was disconnected.”

Noelle’s eyes flicked away.

Fast.

Too fast.

Evan saw it.

Rachel saw him see it.

He turned slowly toward Noelle.

“What do you know about this?”

May you like

Noelle’s face lost another shade of color.
