Chapter 9

Rachel gave him an email address.

Not her home address.

Not her daycare.

Not her phone number.

A guarded, rarely used address she checked from a library computer when fear made her old habits return.

Evan accepted it without complaint.

That helped.

Noelle noticed.

“You’re letting her dictate terms?”

Evan looked at her.

“She raised three children while believing I abandoned her. She gets terms.”

Rachel’s throat tightened.

Noelle shook her head.

“You don’t even know they’re yours.”

Evan’s eyes darkened.

“I know they’re children.”

The sidewalk went quiet around them.

A man passing with a coffee slowed, sensed tension, then moved on.

A spring breeze stirred the green leaves above the storefronts.

Rachel adjusted the stroller canopy over Grace’s face.

Ordinary movement.

Mother movement.

Evan watched with a grief so raw she had to harden herself against it.

He lifted the legal folder slightly.

“I’ll have this preserved.”

Rachel reached for it.

“No. The folder stays with me.”

He released it immediately.

“Okay.”

No argument.

No pull.

No power move.

No Mercer entitlement.

Rachel looked at him, startled.

Evan gave the sealed envelope back as well, holding it out flat.

“I don’t want anyone saying I took it.”

That was smart.

More than smart.

It was protective.

Rachel took the envelope with shaking fingers and slid it back into the folder.

Noelle watched the exchange with open panic.

Evan said to Rachel, “Make copies of the letter before you sleep.”

“I already did.”

For the first time, he almost smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because Rachel had survived exactly as carefully as he would have wanted her to.

Noelle whispered, “Evan, your mother is going to destroy this.”

He turned.

“Destroy what?”

She froze.

“Our wedding.”

“No,” he said. “That was already in trouble when you knew a letter existed and I didn’t.”

Noelle backed away.

“Evan…”

He stepped beside the stroller again.

Not touching it now.

Guarding it.

“Nobody leaves until I hear the truth.”

Rachel looked at him.

Noelle looked at him.

The babies shifted softly in the stroller.

The truth did not arrive.

But the lie stopped moving.
