Chapter 4

Noelle Stanton recovered quickly.

That was what women like her were trained to do.

A flicker of panic.

Then posture.

A breath.

Then polish.

She adjusted the chain strap of her beige handbag and looked at Evan with controlled hurt.

“I know your wedding is in six days and a woman you haven’t seen in years just appeared with three children.”

Evan did not blink.

“That wasn’t my question.”

“It should be.”

Rachel pulled the stroller slightly closer to herself.

Noelle’s eyes moved to the babies.

Not with softness.

With calculation.

Rachel had seen that look before.

It was the look rich families gave problems before deciding whether to hide, buy, or crush them.

Evan stepped beside the stroller.

Not in front of it.

Beside it.

Protective without claiming.

The movement made Rachel’s heart twist against her will.

“You don’t have the right to stand there,” she whispered.

Evan looked at her.

“I know.”

The answer disarmed her.

She had expected denial.

Possession.

Anger.

Maybe a demand for proof.

Instead, he said the only thing she did not know how to fight.

I know.

Noelle’s mouth tightened.

“Evan, don’t let guilt make decisions for you.”

His eyes stayed on Rachel.

“This isn’t guilt.”

“What is it, then?”

He looked down at the gray-eyed little girl.

The child’s hand was still lifted slightly, as if waiting for someone to understand the gesture.

Evan did not take it yet.

He only crouched slowly to her level, careful not to startle her.

Rachel’s whole body tensed.

“Don’t.”

He stopped immediately.

The baby looked at him.

Then at Rachel.

Rachel closed her eyes for half a second.

A tiny, impossible family moment on a Philadelphia sidewalk.

A child deciding whether a stranger felt safe.

Evan whispered, “Hi.”

The little girl blinked.

No paternity confirmed.

No proof spoken.

No name exchanged.

Just the unbearable recognition of matching eyes.

Noelle stepped forward.

“This is humiliating.”

Rachel looked at her.

“For you?”

Noelle’s jaw tightened.

Evan rose again.

“Enough.”

His voice had changed.

The man who had been stunned was becoming focused.

Rachel knew that version too.

The Evan who solved problems by standing still until everyone else revealed themselves.

He lifted the sealed envelope.

“Rachel says this came from my mother.”

Noelle said nothing.

Evan’s stare sharpened.

“And you didn’t ask what letter.”
