Chapter 7

Noelle stepped backward.

Only one step.

But Evan saw it.

Rachel saw it.

Her hand slipped toward her handbag.

Evan’s voice sharpened.

“Noelle.”

She froze.

“What?”

“Don’t call anyone yet.”

Her eyes widened.

“I was getting my phone.”

“I know.”

The sentence landed like an accusation because it was one.

Rachel pulled the stroller closer.

Evan moved slightly, placing himself between Noelle and the babies without making it look like a threat.

Noelle’s face changed from panic to anger.

“You’re choosing her because she showed up with babies.”

Evan’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m choosing not to let another woman in my life disappear before I ask why.”

Rachel looked down.

Another woman.

That meant he had suspected the pattern before.

Maybe not with her.

Maybe in other ways.

Maybe his family had always been built from disappearances disguised as decisions.

Noelle lifted her chin.

“You have no idea what your mother will say.”

Evan went still.

Rachel’s breath caught.

There it was.

Not a confession.

Not proof.

But a thread.

Noelle heard herself too late.

Evan’s voice dropped.

“What did my mother say to you?”

Noelle’s face lost color again.

“I meant generally.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Rachel whispered, “Evan…”

He looked at her.

She shook her head slightly.

Not here.

Not on a sidewalk with babies and strangers.

Not while Noelle still had a phone and the envelope remained sealed.

He understood.

His anger folded inward, controlled.

He turned toward Noelle.

“You will not contact my mother until I do.”

“You don’t order me.”

“No,” he said. “I warn you when you’re about to make this worse for yourself.”

Rachel watched the dynamic shift.

Noelle had arrived on his arm as the woman days away from becoming his wife.

Now she stood outside the circle, clutching her handbag, realizing Evan’s attention had moved somewhere she could not follow.

The gray-eyed little girl reached again toward him.

This time, Evan looked at Rachel for permission.

The question was silent.

Rachel hated how much it cost her.

But she nodded once.

Barely.

Evan lowered his hand.

Tiny fingers wrapped around his index finger.

His face broke.
