Chapter 1 - The Grass Behind the Austin Mansion

Elderly Mother Pretends to Lose Her Memory Until Her Son’s Wife Attacks Her and the Trustees Arrive to Reclaim the Austin Mansion They Thought They Owned.
Rain turned the rear lawn of the Austin mansion into a black mirror.
The swimming pool glowed behind Natalie Caldwell, reflecting blue light across her diamond necklace and sleeveless black gown as she shoved Evelyn Caldwell down onto the wet grass.
Evelyn hit the ground hard.
Her silver hair fell across her face.
Her torn charcoal-gray coat soaked instantly.
Her fingers spread against the mud beside the pool.
Natalie twisted one hand into Evelyn’s hair and pressed one high heel against her fingers.
“Tomorrow, you’ll die forgotten in a state home.”
Evelyn winced.
But she did not cry out.
Under the patio awning, Daniel Caldwell stood in his navy suit, face pale, hands useless at his sides.
Evelyn slowly turned her head toward him.
Rain ran down her bruised forehead.
Her voice was fragile, but every word landed cleanly.
“Daniel… is this what you chose?”
Daniel looked at Natalie.
Then at the folded papers in her clutch.
Then at his mother.
His jaw tightened.
“Mom, just sign the papers.”
Something in Evelyn’s eyes changed.
The pain remained.
The confusion vanished.
Natalie laughed and pulled out the document.
“She doesn’t even remember her own name.”
Evelyn planted both palms against the wet ground.
Her shaking stopped.
She rose without help.
Daniel took one step backward.
The iron gates behind Natalie began to open.
Two black SUVs rolled through the rain.
Five suited men entered the estate in silent formation.
Evelyn reached inside her soaked coat and lifted the original trust document.
“Then explain why my trustees are at your gate.”

Natalie’s face turned white.
