Chapter 6 - Daniel’s Last Excuse
Daniel stepped out from beneath the awning.
The rain touched his suit for the first time.
He looked uncomfortable immediately.
Evelyn watched that small discomfort and felt a bitter ache.
She had been on the ground moments ago.
He hated the rain on his shoulders.
“Mom,” he said carefully, “we can still handle this as a family.”
Natalie looked relieved.
The trustees did not move.
Evelyn’s face remained still.
“As a family?”
Daniel nodded too quickly.
“Yes. Inside. Away from strangers.”
Evelyn looked at the lead trustee.
Then at the security men.
Then back at her son.
“These strangers came when you would not.”
Daniel’s expression cracked.
“That’s not fair.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“Fair was before you asked me to sign away my life on the wet lawn.”
Natalie snapped, “That is not what those papers were.”
Evelyn turned.
“Then read them aloud.”
Natalie froze.
Daniel looked at the paper in Natalie’s hand.
No one spoke.
The silence answered.
The lead trustee lifted the leather folder slightly.
“We are prepared to proceed when Mrs. Caldwell requests it.”
Natalie’s face went pale again.
“Proceed with what?”
No one answered.
The final contents remained hidden.
No assets frozen.
No ownership revealed.
No consequences announced.
Only readiness.
That word became a blade.
Daniel turned toward Evelyn, desperate now.
“I didn’t know she hurt you.”
Evelyn touched the side of her face where rain mixed with pain.
“You heard her say I would die forgotten.”
His mouth closed.
She continued.
“And you asked me to sign.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
For the first time, Evelyn saw shame take shape in him.
Not enough.
