Chapter 3 - Natalie’s Heel Leaves the Grass

Natalie lifted her heel from the place where Evelyn’s fingers had been.
Too late.
Everyone had seen it.
Daniel had seen it.
The trustees had seen it.
The security men near the SUVs had seen it.
The rain had not washed the moment away.
Evelyn flexed her fingers slowly.
No drama.
No scream.
No attempt to win sympathy.
That restraint made Natalie look worse.
Natalie looked at the lead trustee and forced her chin higher.
“This is private property.”
The man stopped several feet away.
He looked first at Evelyn.
Not at Natalie.
“Mrs. Caldwell.”
The respect in his voice cut through the night.
Natalie’s expression cracked.
Evelyn nodded once.
The trustee opened the leather folder, but not far enough to reveal its contents.
Natalie immediately reached for authority.
“I am Daniel Caldwell’s wife.”
No one reacted.
The sentence hung there, beautiful and useless.
Evelyn turned toward her.
“You were very brave when you thought I had no witnesses.”
Natalie’s face flushed.
“You were confused. You attacked me first.”
Daniel looked sharply at her.
Even he knew that lie had arrived too fast.
Evelyn’s eyes moved to him.
“Are you going to repeat that?”
Daniel’s lips parted.
No words came.
Natalie spun toward him.
“Daniel.”
He looked at the document still clutched in her hand.
The paper was damp at the edges now.
The signature line remained blank.
Evelyn noticed his gaze.
“You were waiting for my name.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Mom, we were trying to protect you.”
Evelyn almost smiled.
“By sending me to a state home?”
Natalie snapped, “You needed care.”
Evelyn looked toward the luxury mansion glowing behind her.
“And you needed the house empty.”
Natalie went still.
The trustees heard it.
Daniel heard it.

And the rain kept falling as if the entire estate had decided to listen.
