Chapter 5 - The Gates Stay Open

The iron gates remained open behind the trustees.

Beyond them, the two black SUVs idled in the rain, headlights cutting white lines across the wet driveway.

The security men stood still near the vehicles.

Disciplined.

Silent.

Not attacking.

Not arresting.

Only present.

Natalie kept looking at them as if expecting movement.

No movement came.

That made the scene worse for her.

People who rush can be called dramatic.

People who wait usually have authority.

The lead trustee stepped closer and opened the folder slightly.

Daniel’s face drained as he saw the top sheet, though no one else could read it.

No on-screen text.

No revealed details.

Only Daniel’s reaction.

Evelyn noticed.

“So you do recognize the folder.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Mom…”

“Not now.”

The words were not shouted.

They landed like a door closing.

Natalie’s hand tightened around her damp papers.

“You cannot let them in. Daniel, tell them to leave.”

Daniel looked at the trustees.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at the mansion.

He did not speak.

For once, his silence did not protect Natalie.

It abandoned her.

Natalie felt the shift.

Her eyes widened.

“Daniel.”

Evelyn looked at her daughter-in-law.

“You were very certain when your shoe was on my hand.”

Natalie’s lips trembled.

“I was angry.”

“You were confident.”

The trustees remained expressionless.

Rainwater ran down Evelyn’s coat.

Her silver hair clung to her face, but her posture was straight now.

No confusion.

No weakness.

No trembling.

Daniel whispered, “How long have they been coming?”

Evelyn looked toward the open gates.

“Long enough.”

Not an explanation.

Enough to make Natalie imagine every call, every message, every meeting Evelyn might have arranged while pretending to forget her own name.
