Chapter 7 - Natalie Drops the Papers

Natalie’s papers slipped from her hand.
They hit the wet grass and spread slightly, rain darkening the edges.
She did not pick them up.
Everyone saw why.
The papers no longer gave her power.
They gave her away.
Evelyn looked down at them.
Then at Natalie.
“You brought those outside because you wanted me cornered.”
Natalie’s breathing quickened.
“No.”
“You wanted rain, confusion, pressure, and my son standing there too weak to stop you.”
Daniel flinched.
Natalie’s face twisted.
“You manipulated this whole night.”
Evelyn tilted her head.
“I survived it.”
The difference silenced the lawn.
The pool water rippled behind them.
A gust of rain swept across the patio tiles.
One trustee shifted his folder beneath his coat to protect it from the water.
Natalie noticed the careful movement.
That folder mattered.
The real one.
The one she had not controlled.
Her voice turned sharp with fear.
“What is in that folder?”
Evelyn did not answer.
The lead trustee looked only at Evelyn.
Waiting for permission.
Evelyn gave none.
Natalie stared at her.
“You can’t do this to us.”
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“To us?”
Daniel’s eyes closed briefly.
Natalie had said the wrong thing.
Us.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not the family.
Us: the alliance that had planned her removal.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You mean you and the man who watched?”
Daniel whispered, “Mom, please.”
Evelyn looked at him.
The word please arrived after the shove.
After the threat.
After the papers.
After the trustees.
Too late to be innocence.
Natalie looked toward the open gate, then the mansion, then the pool.
May you like
Her world had shrunk to exits that no longer belonged to her.
