Chapter 10 - the false auditor

Daniel Price had entered Elena’s office three weeks earlier carrying impeccable credentials and a quiet confidence that made people speak freely.
He claimed to have investigated medical fraud for federal agencies. He knew the Rivera trust structure, the company’s internal approval system, and details about Daniel’s research that Elena assumed came from sealed records.
Now she understood.
He had not uncovered the forged transfers.
He had created them.
“You triggered the purchase,” Elena said.
The false auditor smiled from the terminal.
“I completed Daniel’s design.”
“You used my father’s handwriting.”
“I used Daniel’s. Arturo trained us both.”
Arturo stared at the screen.
“Noah.”
The name sounded like an accusation and a plea.
The man’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Catherine had claimed he was her biological son, created during an early experiment. That made him Arturo’s son as well—unless the project had used another donor.
Arturo lowered the gun.
“I was told you died.”
“You were told what you wanted to hear.”
“Daniel said the child did not survive.”
“Daniel protected me from you.”
The transfer reached 68%.
Michael worked at the terminal, opening diagnostic panels and searching for a safe interruption point.
Elena watched her son’s image.
Noah lay still now. Lucía held his hand, speaking to him even though he could not respond.
“What happens when the transfer completes?” Elena asked.
The false auditor leaned closer to his camera.
“The archive becomes mine.”
“And my son?”
“He wakes.”
“Catherine said you planned to extract the data through him.”
“Catherine fears anything she cannot control.”
“That is not a denial.”
He said nothing.
Elena studied him.
The man had presented himself as forty-two, but his true age could have been closer to thirty. There was something familiar in the shape of his eyes—not Catherine’s green, but Arturo’s dark intensity.
“You arranged the party supplies,” she said.
“Brooke did.”
“You told her to use the mud.”
“I told her the compound would identify whether Noah carried the marker.”
“You risked killing him.”
“No. The formula was corrected after the first trial.”
“Then why did he collapse?”
“Michael administered an inhibitor too early.”
Michael looked up. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I wrote the revised protocol.”
The transfer reached 72%.
Elena turned toward Sofia.
“What is inside the metal case?”
“Drives and Daniel’s letter.”
“Anything else?”
Sofia searched beneath the foam lining.
Her fingers found a hidden seam.
She pulled it back and uncovered a small mechanical key.
Michael took it.
“That isn’t for the archive room.”
Arturo recognized it.
“The original power core.”
“Where?” Elena asked.
“Lower level.”
“If we cut the power, does the transfer stop?”
“Yes,” Michael said. “But the emergency shutdown could cause neurological shock.”
“Can we isolate Noah first?”
“Not remotely.”
“Then we go to the core.”
The false auditor heard them.
“You won’t reach it in time.”
Steel shutters dropped over two exits.
The archive room locked.
Sofia ran to the third door, but its control panel turned red.
Arturo lifted his pistol and fired at the lock.
The bullet ricocheted across the concrete wall.
“Stop!” Elena shouted.
Michael examined the hinges. “The doors are magnetically sealed.”
“Can Catherine override them?”
“She’s no longer connected.”
The progress reached 76%.
Elena looked at the glass cabinet holding the original blue bracelet.
A faint gap ran around the cabinet’s frame.
“Daniel expected emergencies,” she said. “He would have built another exit.”
She took Arturo’s pistol and struck the glass.
It did not crack.
Sofia lifted the metal case and slammed one corner against it. The panel fractured.
Together, they broke through and removed the bracelet.
Behind it was a recessed blue sensor.
Elena pressed the old bracelet against it.
A section of wall slid open.
A ladder descended into darkness.
Michael went first.
Sofia followed.
Elena turned to Arturo.
“You stay.”
“I know the core.”
“You also know too much about every lie in this place.”
“If I wanted the archive, I would let the transfer finish.”
“Maybe you do.”
Arturo looked at Noah’s image.
“I may have failed every child in this family, but I will not let another one die beneath this mountain.”
Elena descended without answering.
The ladder ended in a cavernous machinery chamber. Pipes crossed the ceiling. A cylindrical reactor stood at the center, surrounded by analog controls designed decades earlier.
Michael inserted the key.
A panel opened.
Three switches appeared.
PRIMARY POWER.
NEURAL INTERFACE.
REMOTE UPLINK.
The transfer reached 81%.
“Cut the remote uplink,” Elena said.
Michael pulled the third switch.
Nothing happened.
A manual lock prevented it from moving.
Arturo arrived behind them.
“I knew he would change it,” he said.
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
Arturo placed his palm against a hidden plate. The manual lock opened.
Michael pulled the switch.
On the terminal above, the false auditor’s image froze.
REMOTE RECIPIENT DISCONNECTED.
The transfer continued locally.
Elena exhaled.
“Now isolate the neural interface.”
Before Michael could act, a gunshot exploded.
Arturo fell against the railing.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Brooke stood at the end of the machinery chamber holding a second pistol.
“You never understood what Noah was meant to become,” she said.
She aimed at Elena.
Sofia stepped between them.
“Aunt Brooke, stop.”
Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.
“I raised him. I protected him. I gave him my name.”
“The auditor?” Elena asked.
“He is my son in every way that matters.”
“You helped him activate Noah.”
“I helped him reclaim what Daniel stole.”
The transfer reached 87%.
Brooke fired at the control panel.
Sparks erupted.
The neural-interface switch melted into place.
Michael examined the damage.
“We can’t disconnect him from here.”
“Then how?” Elena asked.
“The mansion chamber has a manual release.”
“Lucía is trapped there.”
“We can guide her.”
Brooke raised the pistol again.
Arturo, bleeding heavily, seized her ankle from the floor.
She fired into the machinery.
A pipe ruptured.
Steam filled the chamber.
Elena grabbed Sofia and ran toward the communication station while Michael tried to hold Brooke back.
The progress reached 90%.
The false auditor’s signal returned through an emergency connection.
His voice filled the chamber.
“You disconnected the wrong system.”
Elena looked at the display.
REMOTE RECIPIENT CONNECTED: RIVERA MANSION.
The archive was no longer transferring to the auditor.
It was transferring directly into the hidden basement beneath Noah’s home.

And someone was waiting there to receive it.
👉 When the basement camera came back online, Elena saw Mrs. Bennett standing beside Noah’s platform—holding a drive and speaking to the false auditor as though they had planned everything together.
