Chapter 7 - daniel’s final instructions

The tunnel descended at a steep angle.
Emergency lights glowed along the concrete walls, guiding Elena, Michael, and Sofia deeper beneath the mountain. Behind them, Arturo continued entering codes into the exterior control panel.
Each failed attempt produced a dull electronic tone.
“How long before he gets inside?” Elena asked.
Michael checked the steel doors.
“If he remembers the override, minutes.”
“You said he could not enter.”
“Daniel’s recording said we shouldn’t allow him. That doesn’t mean the facility can stop him.”
Sofia held the metal case against her chest.
Elena noticed dark stains on the girl’s sleeve.
“Are you bleeding?”
“It isn’t mine.”
“Whose is it?”
Sofia looked at Michael.
“We found one of the security guards near the generator room,” he said. “He had been shot.”
“By Brooke?”
“We don’t know.”
They reached a junction where three corridors separated.
A ceiling projector activated.
Daniel appeared on the wall.
The recording showed him seated in a laboratory, thin and unshaven. Gray streaked his hair. His left hand trembled in his lap.
Elena moved closer.
Her brother looked nearly fifteen years older than he should have been.
“If Elena is present,” the recording said, “the system will respond to her voice.”
A blue light appeared beneath the projection.
“Say your full name,” Michael instructed.
“Elena Isabel Rivera.”
The wall opened.
Inside was a smaller room containing a chair, an old computer terminal, and a sealed glass cabinet. A child’s blue bracelet rested behind the glass.
Elena approached it.
The name printed on the band matched her son’s.
Noah Rivera.
The birth date was eight years and three months earlier than Noah’s actual birth.
Daniel’s son.
The first Noah.
Sofia placed the metal case beside the terminal. It opened automatically.
Inside were several drives and a handwritten letter.
Elena recognized Daniel’s writing.
She unfolded it.
Lena,
If you are reading this, then I failed to destroy the project before Father found another use for it.
Do not believe anyone who says your son was designed. He was not.
Elena stopped.
Michael read over her shoulder.
“What does it say?” Sofia asked.
Elena continued.
The second Noah was conceived naturally. Michael never implanted an embryo. Father altered your medical history because he needed you to believe your pregnancy was part of the experiment.
Elena looked at Michael.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried. Arturo intercepted every message.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was taken.”
“By whom?”
Michael faced the projection.
“Daniel.”
The recording resumed as if responding.
“I detained Michael because I believed he had betrayed us,” Daniel said. “I was wrong. The betrayal came from inside the family.”
A list of names appeared on the screen.
Arturo Rivera.
Brooke Lawson.
Dr. Samuel Voss.
Catherine Rivera.
Elena froze at the final name.
Her mother.
Catherine had died eleven years earlier after a sudden stroke. Elena remembered Arturo standing beside the hospital bed, refusing to cry.
“What did my mother have to do with this?” she whispered.
The recording continued.
“Mother discovered Brooke’s pregnancy and tried to shut down the program. Father ordered Voss to alter her medication. Her stroke was not natural.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
Michael closed his eyes.
Elena gripped the edge of the terminal.
Arturo had built his empire around the story of Catherine’s death. He established a neurological research foundation in her honor. He gave speeches about losing the woman he loved.
All while hiding evidence that he had caused it.
A deep metallic sound echoed through the corridor.
The outer doors had opened.
Arturo was inside.
Daniel’s image flickered.
“The first Noah died because Brooke attempted an unauthorized activation test. The compound caused catastrophic neural overload. She blamed the facility. Father helped erase the records.”
Elena thought of the mud poured over her son.
“Brooke used the same compound today.”
“Yes,” Michael said. “She wants to know whether your Noah inherited the marker.”
“Why?”
“Because the marker may unlock the complete research archive.”
The terminal displayed a live map of the mansion.
A red dot moved beneath the house.
Noah.
Several other dots surrounded him.
Elena’s phone showed no signal, but the facility had established a direct connection to the secret basement Daniel built years earlier.
A video window opened.
Lucía was carrying Noah through a narrow tunnel. Mrs. Bennett stumbled behind her, pressing a hand to her bleeding arm.
Brooke followed with a pistol.
“Elena,” Sofia whispered.
On the screen, Lucía reached a locked door.
She pounded against it while Michael attempted to access the remote controls.
The system rejected him.
SUBJECT AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
“What does it need?” Elena asked.
“Noah’s biological signature.”
“He’s unconscious.”
“The scanner may still recognize him.”
Michael opened a communication channel.
“Lucía, press Noah’s left hand against the blue panel.”
The audio crackled.
Lucía looked up in shock but obeyed.
The door unlocked.
She dragged Noah and Mrs. Bennett through, then slammed it behind them just as Brooke fired.
The bullet struck the glass panel.
Brooke stood on the other side, screaming.
“You can’t keep him! He belongs to Daniel!”
Elena leaned toward the microphone.
“He belongs to no one.”
Brooke’s expression changed when she heard Elena’s voice.
“You stole my son’s life,” Brooke said.
“My child did nothing to you.”
“He has everything Noah was supposed to have.”
“Your son died because you experimented on him.”
Brooke raised the gun and fired again.
The camera feed shattered into static.
A hand seized Elena from behind.
Arturo pressed a pistol against Michael’s neck.
He had entered the archive without making a sound.
“Step away from the terminal,” he said.
Elena turned toward her father.
“You killed Mother.”
Arturo’s face remained empty.
“Daniel believed many things.”
“There are medication records.”
“There are fabricated records.”
“Then why are you holding a gun?”
“Because Daniel built this place to turn my children against me.”
A new file appeared on the terminal.
It showed Arturo standing beside Catherine’s hospital bed, injecting something into her IV.
Arturo stared at the image.
For the first time, he looked genuinely confused.
“That recording is impossible.”
Elena watched the timestamp.

The video had been captured two hours after Catherine’s official death.
👉 Before Elena could confront him, Catherine Rivera opened her eyes in the hospital recording and whispered, “Arturo, Daniel knows you replaced me.”
