Chapter 14 - the thermal purge

The countdown reached nine minutes.
Heat began rising through the floor vents.
Michael ran to the terminal, but L-2 had removed the override card and crushed its chip beneath her heel.
“The purge destroys the archive and everyone inside,” he said.
“That is its purpose,” L-2 replied.
Sofia kept the pistol trained on her.
“Turn it off.”
“I can’t.”
“Then tell us who can.”
“Malcolm.”
“He disconnected,” Elena said.
“He will not answer during containment.”
Arturo leaned against the railing, his face gray from blood loss.
“There is another override.”
L-2 turned toward him.
Arturo pointed to the lower machinery chamber.
“Catherine designed a manual cooling system.”
Michael shook his head. “The pipe ruptured.”
“Only one pipe. There are three.”
The countdown reached eight minutes.
Elena supported Arturo as they descended toward the power core. Brooke and Sofia followed. The security officers hesitated until L-2 ordered them to help.
For the first time, she was not obeying the board.
She was giving a command of her own.
The machinery chamber had filled with steam. Michael located the remaining cooling valves, but each required a separate manual release positioned across the room.
“All three must be opened simultaneously,” he said.
“How long must they stay open?” Elena asked.
“Until the core temperature falls below the purge threshold.”
“Meaning?”
“Three minutes.”
Arturo could barely stand.
Elena assigned positions.
Michael took the eastern valve. Two security officers moved to the western control. Elena approached the central wheel.
L-2 joined her.
“Why are you helping?” Elena asked.
“I don’t know.”
“That is the first honest answer you’ve given.”
The countdown reached seven minutes.
They turned the valves together.
The wheels resisted.
Elena’s palms burned against the heated metal. L-2 gritted her teeth and forced the central mechanism downward.
Water thundered through the pipes.
The core temperature began to fall.
At the mansion, Catherine monitored the process remotely.
“You need twenty more degrees,” she said through the speakers.
Noah sat beside her, exhausted but conscious.
“Mom,” he said, “come home.”
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
“I will.”
Daniel’s voice emerged through him again.
“The cooling system will not stop the purge permanently.”
Michael looked toward the camera.
“What will?”
“The facility requires proof the archive has been legally transferred.”
“To whom?” Elena asked.
“To its beneficiary.”
Noah.
The original trust documents held by Catherine could confirm his ownership. But the facility needed them physically authenticated.
Catherine examined the pages.
“There is a biometric seal.”
“The mountain scanner cannot reach the mansion,” Michael said.
Young Noah touched the wall terminal.
“I can.”
Elena’s heart tightened.
“No. You are not reconnecting to the system.”
“The connection never fully closed,” Daniel’s voice said through him. “The missing one percent remains active.”
Michael checked the local display.
He was right. A thin signal persisted between Noah and the archive.
“If Catherine scans the trust through the mansion terminal,” he said, “Noah’s marker may carry the authentication here.”
“May?”
“We don’t have another method.”
The countdown reached five minutes.
Elena looked at her son through the screen.
“Noah, you don’t have to do this.”
He answered in his own voice.
“Will everyone there die?”
Elena could not lie.
“Yes.”
“Then do it.”
Catherine placed the first trust document beneath the scanner.
The terminal read each page.
The signal traveled through Noah.
He winced but remained awake.
One by one, the clauses appeared on the mountain terminal. Ownership records, hidden beneficiaries, medical protections, and encrypted research restrictions filled the screen.
The countdown reached four minutes.
The core temperature continued dropping.
L-2’s hands slipped on the valve.
Elena caught the wheel before it closed.
“Stay with me.”
“I was never supposed to survive failure,” L-2 whispered.
“Then this is not failure.”
“What is it?”
“A beginning.”
The final trust page entered the scanner.
A warning appeared.
BENEFICIARY SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
Catherine looked at Noah.
“He must sign.”
“There’s no paper here,” he said.
“Use the screen.”
Noah traced his name with one finger.
The mountain terminal rejected it.
SIGNATURE DOES NOT MATCH ARCHIVED SAMPLE.
Elena stared at the message.
“Noah has never signed any trust document.”
Arturo spoke from the floor.
“The sample belongs to the first Noah.”
Brooke’s face went pale.
“Daniel’s child?”
“He signed a medical consent form when he was seven,” Arturo said. “Daniel encoded it into the trust.”
“That child is dead,” Elena said.
Noah Lawson’s voice came through the mansion feed.
“No. He isn’t.”
Everyone turned.
The false auditor approached the terminal.
Catherine had said he was her biological son, but the archive had already exposed countless lies.
Noah Lawson looked at Brooke.
“You raised me because Daniel asked you to.”
Brooke began to cry.
He continued.
“But you did not know why.”
He pressed one finger to the mansion screen and signed the name Noah Rivera.
The mountain accepted it.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY.
Elena stared at the result.
Noah Lawson was not Catherine’s experimental son.
He was Daniel and Brooke’s child—the first Noah, who had supposedly died in the facility.
Catherine’s earlier claim had been another deception designed to keep Arturo from recognizing him.
The countdown stopped at two minutes and twelve seconds.
THERMAL PURGE SUSPENDED.
The valves unlocked.
Elena released the wheel and collapsed against L-2.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then every terminal in the mountain displayed a new message.
ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY CONFIRMED.
SECONDARY BENEFICIARY INVALIDATED.
Young Noah’s ownership disappeared from the trust.
Noah Lawson now controlled Rivera Biomedical.
He looked into the camera.
“I’m sorry, Elena.”
“For what?”
“I never needed to steal the archive through your son.”
The mountain doors unlocked.
The armed security officers received new orders on their devices.
L-2 read the message.
Her face drained of color.
“What does it say?” Elena asked.
L-2 showed her the screen.
DIRECTIVE FROM CHAIRMAN NOAH RIVERA:
DETAIN ELENA RIVERA AND ALL WITNESSES.
