Chapter 8 - the woman who died twice

No one moved.

The hospital recording continued silently for several seconds. Catherine lay connected to machines, her face pale but unmistakably alive. Arturo stood beside her bed with a syringe in his hand.

Then Catherine spoke again.

“Daniel knows you replaced me.”

The video ended.

Arturo lowered the pistol.

“That is not your mother.”

Elena turned toward him. “You were standing beside her.”

“I was standing beside a body created to resemble her.”

Sofia stared at him. “That’s impossible.”

“Not created biologically,” Arturo said. “Altered surgically. Dr. Voss used a patient with similar features.”

Michael moved carefully away from the gun.

“Why stage Catherine’s death twice?” he asked.

Arturo looked at the frozen image on the screen.

“Because Catherine was still alive.”

Elena felt anger rise again.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“She disappeared two days before the public stroke. Voss told me she had suffered a medical crisis and brought me to the hospital. The woman in the bed looked like Catherine, but something was wrong. Her scars were different. Her voice was wrong.”

“Yet you helped declare her dead.”

“I was being blackmailed.”

“By whom?”

“Daniel.”

The name echoed through the archive.

Elena shook her head. “Daniel exposed the fraud.”

“Daniel created the fraud.”

Michael stepped forward. “That isn’t true.”

“You were his prisoner,” Arturo said. “How would you know?”

“Because Catherine freed me.”

Silence fell.

Michael touched the scar near his temple.

“Four years after Daniel took me, Catherine entered the facility. She was alive. She helped me escape the lower medical wing.”

Elena gripped the terminal.

“You saw my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you bring her home?”

“She refused to leave.”

“Why?”

“She said Noah was not safe while the archive existed.”

Arturo’s expression changed.

“You never told me this.”

“You never asked whether Catherine survived. You only asked where Daniel stored the research.”

The two men faced one another across the room.

Elena realized their conflict had never been about truth. It had been about which secrets could be controlled.

The terminal chimed.

A second live feed appeared.

Lucía had reached an underground chamber beneath the mansion. Noah lay on a padded platform while Mrs. Bennett treated her injured arm. The boy was awake now, though weak.

“Mom?” he called.

Elena rushed to the microphone.

“Noah, I’m here.”

His frightened face turned toward the ceiling camera.

“Where are you?”

“I’m coming back.”

“Brooke said I’m not your real son.”

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

“You are my son. Nothing she says changes that.”

“Why is there another bracelet with my name?”

Elena looked at the bracelet inside the glass cabinet.

How could she explain a dead child, stolen research, and years of lies to an eight-year-old?

“It belonged to someone your uncle loved,” she said. “He gave you the same name because he believed it would protect you.”

Michael looked at her but did not correct the answer.

A loud pounding came from behind Lucía.

Brooke had found another entrance.

“Michael,” Lucía said into the camera, “the door won’t hold.”

He accessed the controls.

The system displayed three options.

SEAL RESIDENCE TUNNEL.

RELEASE SUBJECT ACCESS.

INITIATE TRANSFER.

“What does transfer mean?” Elena asked.

Michael’s face tightened. “It moves the archive.”

“Where?”

“No one knows. Daniel created a remote backup facility.”

Arturo raised the pistol again.

“Do not initiate it.”

“Why?” Elena asked.

“Because the transfer requires Noah’s living neural pattern.”

“You mean it scans him?”

“It may do more.”

Michael pointed toward the first option. “Seal the tunnel.”

“If we seal it, Lucía and Noah could be trapped.”

“If we release subject access, Brooke may reach them.”

“What happens if we initiate transfer?”

Arturo answered.

“The system will copy everything through Noah’s nervous system.”

Elena stared at him.

“He is a child, not a storage device.”

“The marker in his blood responds to encoded electromagnetic patterns. Daniel believed living tissue was the only secure encryption.”

Sofia backed away from the terminal. “That’s why Brooke activated him.”

Michael nodded.

“She needs Noah conscious inside the network.”

On the mansion feed, the door bent inward.

Brooke fired through the damaged panel.

Mrs. Bennett pulled Noah behind the platform.

Lucía returned fire with the revolver.

The gun clicked empty.

Elena made her decision.

“Seal the residence tunnel.”

Michael entered the command.

A steel barrier dropped between Brooke and the chamber. She leaped backward just before it crushed the pistol from her hand.

Lucía collapsed with relief.

But the terminal flashed red.

UNAUTHORIZED SYSTEM OVERRIDE.

Someone else had taken control.

The option INITIATE TRANSFER selected itself.

“No,” Michael said.

He pulled cables from the terminal.

The screen remained active.

Inside the mansion chamber, blue lights surrounded Noah.

He screamed and gripped his head.

Elena struck the controls, but nothing responded.

“Who is overriding us?” she demanded.

A new video window opened.

An elderly woman sat in another control room.

Her silver hair fell across her shoulders. Her face was thinner, but Elena recognized the green eyes immediately.

Catherine Rivera looked directly into the camera.

“Hello, Elena,” she said. “I’m sorry, but I need your son to finish what Daniel began.”

👉 Elena had spent eleven years mourning her mother, but Catherine was alive—and she had just activated the system that could destroy Noah’s mind.
