Grandma Cut His Promise / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE PROMISE THEY COULDN’T CUTThe family court reopened the case under emergency review.

Mark, Amy, Leo, and Brenda entered through separate doors. Lily remained at the hospital under police protection. Ava and Elaine were still missing.

Paul appeared by video from a guarded medical room.

Karen remained unconscious.

The judge reviewed the recovered dinner footage, school records, financial audit, forged medical files, and the new petition submitted under Amy’s identity.

“There is no basis to remove these children from their parents,” the judge said.

Brenda closed her eyes.

The court suspended her contact with Leo and Lily indefinitely. Paul’s earlier guardianship order was voided. Every trust transaction was frozen.

No final criminal judgments were issued.

The investigation remained active.

The missing money had not been restored.

Ava had not been found.

Elaine still possessed the children’s samples and access to the identity system.

After the hearing, Leo sat beside Amy in a private courthouse room.

He held the severed golden curl on his palm.

“Does my promise still count?”

Amy knelt in front of him.

“The promise was never inside your hair.”

“But I said I would grow it until Lily got better.”

“You kept loving her after Grandma cut it. That is what counted.”

Mark sat beside his son.

“When it grows back, you decide what happens to it. Nobody else.”

Leo carefully placed the curl inside a small envelope.

Brenda stood behind the observation glass under supervision. She watched but was not permitted to enter.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that apology did not grant access.

Her phone, held as evidence by investigators, began vibrating.

A detective checked the screen.

The call came from Elaine.

He answered on speaker.

Ava’s frightened voice filled the room.

“Mr. Mark?”

Mark grabbed the phone.

“Ava, where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can you see anything outside?”

“Trees. Water. A little house.”

The lake property.

Police units moved immediately.

Mark kept Ava talking.

“Is Elaine with you?”

“She says her name is Lily now.”

Amy felt cold move through her.

“What does that mean?”

Ava whispered:

“She put on your hair and made a video.”

Elaine had created facial prosthetics, voice samples, and forged biometric files under Amy’s identity. She was preparing to appear as the children’s mother.

“Is anyone else there?” Mark asked.

Ava began crying.

“The baby.”

Amy stood.

“What baby?”

The line crackled.

In the background, a toddler whimpered.

Lily was still protected at the hospital—or the staff believed she was.

Mark called the pediatric ward from another phone.

The nurse confirmed Lily was asleep in her room with two officers outside.

Amy demanded a live video.

The camera opened.

A toddler lay beneath the blanket.

Her face was turned toward the wall.

Amy stared at the image.

“Show me her wrist.”

The nurse lifted the child’s hand.

The hospital bracelet carried Lily’s name and patient number.

But the little finger was missing the tiny birthmark Lily had carried since infancy.

The child in the hospital bed was not Lily.

Someone had switched her before the identity corruption was discovered.

Ava’s call continued from the lake.

“Elaine says the real Lily can fix my records.”

Mark’s voice shook.

“Where is she?”

Ava did not answer.

A woman took the phone.

Her voice sounded exactly like Amy’s.

“Bring Brenda and the original trust documents to the boathouse.”

The real Amy stared at the speaker.

“What have you done with my daughter?”

Elaine laughed softly in Amy’s stolen voice.

“I gave her a new mother.”

The call ended.

Police reached the lake property twelve minutes later.

The boathouse doors stood open.

A roast-beef dinner had been arranged on the old wooden table, matching Brenda’s Sunday place settings.

At the center lay Leo’s severed golden curl.

Beside it sat Lily’s hospital bracelet and a fresh yellow legal pad.

The first page contained one sentence in Brenda’s handwriting:

Now choose which little girl comes home as Lily.

Brenda stared at the live police feed.

“I didn’t write that.”

Mark turned toward her.

The detective opened the next page.

It carried a school pickup authorization signed three years earlier—before Ava’s records were merged with Lily’s.

The parent signature belonged to Mark.

He had never seen the form.

Then a small figure moved behind the boathouse curtain.

A toddler stepped into view wearing Lily’s pajamas.

Before anyone could see her face, another child began crying beneath the floorboards.
