Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO BRENDA DIDN’T KNOW EXISTEDThe laptop video had come from Mark’s smartwatch.
Two weeks before dinner, he left it inside Leo’s backpack while charging another device. The watch automatically recorded audio when it detected repeated crying.
The first recording captured Brenda collecting Leo from school.
The second captured Paul’s office.
Mark and Amy had not listened until Leo came home with his hair cut and refused to remove his hood.
The files revealed more than coaching.
Paul told Brenda that once she controlled the children, Morrow Pediatric Recovery Group would buy the lake property. Part of the purchase price would restore the trust.
The remaining money would be divided through legal and management fees.
Brenda asked whether Mark could challenge the sale.
Paul answered:
“Not if his reaction proves he is unstable.”
The Sunday dinner had been the final trap.
Brenda would reveal Leo’s haircut.
Mark would become furious.
Hidden cameras would record him.
Paul would arrive with the emergency custody order and claim the children needed immediate protection.
Instead, Mark discovered the school records first and brought the laptop.
The plan collapsed because the evidence Brenda created against him became evidence against her.
A third audio file contained Karen’s voice.
She worried that taking Lily from the hospital would cause a scene.
Paul replied:
“The mother’s coat and the temporary order will get you through the first desk. After that, Morrow handles transport.”
Amy listened twice.
“Morrow expected Lily.”
The company denied any knowledge of the scheme. Its attorney claimed Paul approached them as a representative of the trust and offered the lake property as a potential site for a pediatric recovery campus.
The proposal included a condition.
Lily would be enrolled in Morrow’s private residential program after the sale.
Amy stared at the contract.
“Our toddler was part of the deal.”
The program required children to remain on-site for twelve weeks, with parental visits limited during initial treatment.
If Brenda became guardian, she could approve the transfer.
Morrow would gain the land, a high-profile patient, and access to charitable donations connected to Lily’s story.
Paul would gain millions in fees.
Brenda would hide the missing trust money.
Leo’s haircut made the family appear unstable enough for the first order.
Lily’s medical chart would support the second.
Police located Karen’s abandoned car near a commuter station.
Inside were Amy’s clothing, hospital badges, a second phone, and photographs of Lily’s room.
The phone contained messages from someone saved as Director Hale.
The director instructed Karen how to enter the hospital and which elevator avoided security cameras.
Morrow identified Dr. Stephen Hale as its admissions director.
He denied sending the messages.
His phone had been cloned.
Investigators traced the active device to Brenda’s house.
Brenda appeared genuinely confused.
Police searched the attic.
They found a signal relay hidden beneath insulation, routing messages through her internet connection.
Someone had prepared to make Brenda appear responsible if the operation failed.
Paul was not merely using her.
He was building a path that left every digital trail at her home.
Mark looked at his mother.
“Did Paul ever intend to replace the money?”
Brenda began trembling.
“He showed me bank confirmations.”
The confirmations were forged.
No repayment account existed.
The developer’s deposit had gone directly to Paul’s offshore company.
Brenda had risked her grandchildren, but she was not the person positioned to profit most.
The laptop contained one final video.
Karen stood inside Paul’s office arguing with him.
“You said Brenda would take the blame, not the children.”
Paul answered:
“The children are the leverage.”
Karen looked toward the camera hidden inside Leo’s backpack.
For one second, she appeared to notice it.
Then she whispered:
“If anything happens to Lily, I’m telling Mark who changed the first test.”
Amy froze.
“What first test?”
Leo pointed toward the screen.
“The baby test.”
Lily’s illness had been discovered after an abnormal blood result shortly after birth.
