Chapter 6 - THE TEST THAT CHANGED LILY’S LIFEAmy demanded an independent review of Lily’s original laboratory records.
The hospital resisted at first, citing archived data and outside-lab processing. Mark’s attorney obtained an emergency order before any file could be deleted.
Lily’s newborn blood sample had been tested twice.
The first result was normal.
The second, entered six hours later, showed the rare marker that led doctors to monitor her for the condition she later developed.
The second result came from a laboratory owned by Morrow Pediatric Recovery Group.
Amy’s hands shook as she read the report.
“Did they make her sick?”
An independent specialist cautioned that the altered record did not prove Lily’s illness was fabricated. Her current symptoms and treatment needs were real.
But the false early result placed her inside Morrow’s monitoring network before she became visibly ill.
Someone had selected her.
Karen’s messages indicated Paul knew about the substitution.
Mark searched his father’s trust records again.
The trust held not only the lake property but shares in a small medical-technology company. Morrow wanted those shares because they carried licensing rights to a pediatric monitoring system.
Lily’s enrollment in its recovery program would give Morrow both the technology and a public case demonstrating its value.
The child’s illness had become a business opportunity.
Brenda denied knowing anything about altered tests.
“I only wanted the property sold.”
Amy looked at her.
“You say that as if it were small.”
“I never agreed to hurt Lily.”
“You agreed to take her from her parents.”
“I thought she would receive excellent care.”
“You thought what Paul needed you to think.”
Brenda covered her face.
Police found Karen in a church basement twenty miles away. She was frightened, exhausted, and carrying a flash drive.
She surrendered voluntarily.
Karen admitted impersonating Amy at school and the hospital. Paul told her Amy and Mark were mismanaging the children and that a short separation would protect them while the trust finances were repaired.
“Why wear Amy’s clothes?” an investigator asked.
“To collect records without starting a public confrontation.”
“You attempted to remove Lily.”
“Paul said Morrow had a court-approved bed waiting.”
“You knew Amy had not consented.”
“Yes.”
Karen began crying.
She had obeyed because Paul threatened to report her role in earlier forged trust invoices.
Like Brenda, she called continued wrongdoing protection from exposure.
The flash drive contained correspondence between Paul and a Morrow executive.
Paul promised guardianship, the land, the technology shares, and “continued access to Subject L.”
Amy felt sick at the wording.
Lily was not named as a patient.
She was listed as a subject.
The correspondence did not prove anyone caused her illness, but it showed that Morrow expected long-term access to her medical data and biological samples.
Mark asked Karen what she meant by the first test.
She described seeing Paul replace a laboratory envelope in the hospital records office shortly after Lily’s birth.
“What was inside the original envelope?”
“A normal result.”
“And the replacement?”
“The abnormal marker.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Paul said the first laboratory made a mistake.”
“You believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Karen provided the name of the technician who processed the replacement test.
Dr. Elaine Voss.
Voss no longer worked for Morrow. She had disappeared after filing an ethics complaint two years earlier.
Her final known address was a small town in Vermont.
Police contacted local authorities.
The house stood empty, but a recent package waited outside.
It was addressed to Mark.
Inside was a child’s yellow hospital bracelet and a note:
Lily’s test was changed, but not to make a healthy child look sick. It was changed to hide whose blood they tested.
The abnormal sample did not belong to Lily.
