Chapter 9 - WHAT BRENDA TRADEDBrenda asked to speak with Mark alone.
He refused.
Amy remained beside him while an investigator recorded the meeting.
Brenda placed a small key on the table.
It opened a locked drawer beneath her dining-room cabinet.
Inside were original contracts, trust statements, and a handwritten agreement between Brenda and Paul.
She had signed it six months earlier.
The agreement granted Paul a percentage of any recovery obtained from Morrow and authority to negotiate using the grandchildren’s trust assets.
In return, he promised to hide the missing $940,000.
“You knew he was targeting Morrow,” Mark said.
“I thought he was forcing them to compensate Lily.”
“You gave him power over the trust.”
“I believed the settlement would repair everything.”
“You believed money could repair whatever you did next.”
Brenda began crying.
She admitted knowing about Ava before Sunday dinner.
Paul told her Ava’s records had been stolen and attached to Lily’s file by a corrupt doctor. He claimed keeping Ava privately housed would protect both girls until he negotiated a settlement.
“Did you know Elaine was involved?”
“Paul said she wanted her daughter hidden.”
“Why did you tell Ava to call Amy her mother?”
“Because Paul said hospital staff might ask who was responsible for her.”
Amy’s voice sharpened.
“You prepared a child to use my identity.”
Brenda looked toward the floor.
“Yes.”
“And then you tried to take my actual children.”
“Yes.”
There was no explanation left that did not end with choice.
Brenda also admitted why she cut Leo’s hair.
Paul believed the promise video connected Leo emotionally to Lily and made Amy and Mark appear attentive and united. A custody evaluator might see the curls as evidence of a stable family ritual.
He told Brenda the visual connection needed to disappear.
She took the scissors willingly.
“I thought hair was temporary,” she whispered.
“The fear wasn’t,” Mark said.
The investigator opened the original agreements.
Paul’s signature appeared, but the financial account receiving his payments did not belong to him.
It belonged to Elaine Voss.
Brenda’s missing trust money had funded Elaine’s hidden research and Ava’s housing.
Paul received fees, but Elaine controlled the larger account.
The supposed whistleblower had used him to preserve Morrow’s secret program after the company stopped protecting her.
She needed Lily’s guardianship transferred because Amy had begun requesting independent test reviews.
She needed the lake property because its technology shares could restore her control over Morrow.
Paul wanted ownership.
Elaine wanted the research.
Brenda wanted her theft concealed.
Each believed they were using the others.
The children absorbed every consequence.
Police located Paul inside a storage facility near the river. He had been assaulted and left bound beside boxes of Morrow records.
He survived.
When questioned, he immediately blamed Elaine.
“She took Karen.”
Karen had disappeared again from protective housing.
Paul claimed Elaine forced her to alter Lily’s hospital chart using biometric access obtained during the attempted abduction.
“Where are they?” Mark asked.
“Morrow’s old diagnostic center.”
Police surrounded the abandoned building.
Inside, they found Karen unconscious beside a computer terminal.
Elaine was gone.
A live camera showed her driving with a child in the rear seat.
The child wore a hood.
Amy gripped Mark’s arm.
“Is that Ava?”
The girl turned slightly.
Golden curls emerged beneath the fabric.
Mark looked toward Leo, who sat safely in another room under police protection.
It was not him.
Elaine had dressed Ava to resemble Leo before cutting her hair unevenly.
On the passenger seat lay several labeled sample bags.
One read Leo Bennett.
Another read Lily Bennett.
Elaine had obtained biological samples from both children during Brenda’s unauthorized pickups and Lily’s hospital visits.
Paul looked at the screen and whispered:
“She doesn’t need the guardianship anymore.”
“Why?”
“She can build new identities from the samples.”
The identity system did not require the children physically if Elaine could reproduce their biometrics, medical records, and genetic confirmations.
She could make Ava appear to be either Bennett child whenever she needed access to the trust.
Then Mark’s phone received a court notification.
A new emergency petition had been filed under Amy’s authenticated signature.
It requested that Brenda regain temporary custody because Mark posed an immediate danger.
