She was six years old and the daughter of Dr. Elaine Voss.

Ava arrived at the school wearing an oversized coat and carrying medical records inside a plastic folder. A neighbor had driven her after receiving instructions from Elaine.

Elaine remained missing.

Ava had spent much of her life in Morrow-controlled housing while doctors told her she could not safely attend ordinary school.

Ava nodded as though she had heard that answer in many forms.

She recognized Brenda from a photograph.

“That lady’s house had the quiet room.”

Brenda had allowed Paul to keep Ava upstairs during secret meetings. She claimed she believed the child was receiving private tutoring.

Ava described locked windows, prepared meals, and a camera above the bed.

Brenda entered only once.

“You asked if I could pretend to be Lily,” Ava said.

Brenda recoiled.

“I did not.”

Ava looked frightened but certain.

“You said if doctors asked, I should say Amy was my mommy.”

Mark stepped between Brenda and the child.

“You knew.”

Brenda insisted Paul told her Ava was part of a confidential custody evaluation. He wanted to test whether the girl could identify safe adults from photographs.

Even if true, Brenda had participated without contacting parents, police, or child services.

Ava’s folder contained Elaine Voss’s written statement.

Elaine admitted changing the original newborn test under pressure from Morrow. She later tried to separate the records, but Paul threatened to expose her own role and remove Ava permanently.

She fled with copies of the archive.

Two weeks earlier, Paul found them.

Elaine sent Ava away before he arrived.

The final page read:

Paul is not protecting Morrow. He is collecting enough evidence to purchase the company through the Bennett trust.

Paul intended to use Brenda’s guardianship authority to sell the lake property and acquire controlling shares in Morrow through a hidden investment fund.

He had played every side.

He promised Elaine her daughter’s identity would be restored.

He intended to own the company once the scandal reduced its value.

The children were leverage for a hostile takeover.

Investigators froze Paul’s accounts and issued a nationwide alert.

His car was found near the airport.

He had not boarded any flight.

A security image showed him entering a hotel with Elaine Voss.

She appeared to be walking voluntarily.

Ava insisted her mother would never cooperate.

Then Amy noticed the date on Elaine’s written statement.

It had been signed after the hotel footage.

Elaine had prepared the folder while supposedly under Paul’s control.

She might not be only his victim.

Police searched her professional history.

Before becoming a whistleblower, Elaine helped design Morrow’s patient-identity system. She created the software that allowed Ava’s records to merge with Lily’s.

The ethics complaint came only after Morrow tried to remove her from the program.

Mark stared at Ava’s folder.

“Her mother helped build this.”

Amy looked toward the child.

“That doesn’t make Ava responsible.”

It also meant Elaine might still possess administrative control over every medical record involved.

That evening, Lily’s hospital chart updated automatically.

Her diagnosis disappeared.
