Chapter 2

Audrey had almost told Liam three times before the wedding.

The first time was after he proposed.

They were sitting on the balcony of her apartment, rain moving across Virginia in thin silver lines, the ring still unfamiliar on her hand.

Liam said, “You can tell me anything.”

She nearly did.

Then her phone lit up with Ethan’s name.

Her body changed before she answered.

Liam noticed.

She said it was nothing.

The second time was during premarital counseling.

The counselor asked whether either of them had unresolved family trauma that might affect the marriage.

Audrey’s throat tightened.

Liam reached for her hand.

She almost spoke.

Then she remembered Ethan’s voice.

Nobody believes women who wait too long.

So she smiled and said she was fine.

The third time was the morning of the wedding.

She stood in front of the mirror while her bridesmaids adjusted the veil, and she saw one old mark near her shoulder before the dress covered it.

Her stomach turned.

She wanted to run to Liam.

Instead, Ethan entered the bridal suite uninvited.

The bridesmaids had stepped out.

Her mother had not yet arrived.

He closed the door behind him and smiled like a man checking a lock.

“You look expensive,” he said.

Audrey froze.

He walked around her slowly, never touching, because he had learned how to terrify without leaving new marks.

“You tell him anything today,” he said, “and I promise you he will look at you differently.”

Audrey did not answer.

He leaned closer.

“No groom wants to learn at the altar that his bride comes with damage.”

Her hands shook around the bouquet.

Ethan smiled.

Then he said the sentence she had heard for years.

“Nobody will believe you.”

He left before anyone returned.

Audrey stood alone in the bridal suite, heartbeat racing, and opened her old laptop with shaking fingers.

For years, she had saved recordings.

Not because she was brave.

Because some quiet part of her had refused to let Ethan own the only version of her life.
