Chapter 6

Downstairs, the wedding continued without them for four more minutes.
Guests checked watches.
A string quartet repeated a section of music.
Audrey’s mother smiled too brightly near the aisle.
Ethan stood near the front with a champagne glass, accepting compliments on “raising such a beautiful bride.”
Then his phone vibrated.
He glanced at it.
Nothing readable to anyone else.
But his face shifted.
A small tightening near the mouth.
A pause before he smiled again.
Then another vibration.
And another.
Sophia had moved quickly.
Not publicly.
Not dramatically.
But Ethan had spent his life recognizing danger in paperwork.
That was how men like him survived.
Not by fearing tears.
By fearing records.
He left the ballroom before the coordinator could stop him.
Upstairs, Audrey had just wrapped the robe tighter around herself.
Liam stood between her and the door, phone still connected.
Sophia’s voice remained calm through the speaker.
“Do not confront him alone. Keep the device open. Do not delete, rename, or move anything. I am initiating preservation protocols.”
Audrey looked at Liam.
“What does that mean?”
“It means he cannot make this disappear quietly.”
Her eyes filled again.
Then the doorknob turned.
Liam’s entire posture changed.
Not aggressive.
Protective.
Ethan entered with the champagne glass in one hand and the old smile on his face.
“Everything all right in here?”
The laptop played another muffled fragment before anyone answered.
Ethan’s own voice.
Not clear enough for a transcript.
Clear enough for him.
His smile vanished.
The glass tightened in his fingers.
Liam did not move toward him.
He simply stood in front of Audrey.
Ethan looked at the laptop.
Then the phone in Liam’s hand.
Then Audrey in the robe, no longer hiding her eyes.
“What have you done?” Ethan whispered.
Audrey’s voice shook, but it did not break.
May you like
“Stopped being alone.”
