Chapter 8

Audrey’s mother appeared in the hallway but did not enter.
That was one more heartbreak Audrey had not prepared for.
She stood beyond Ethan’s shoulder in a pale blue dress, one hand near her necklace, eyes moving between her husband and her daughter.
“Audrey?” she asked.
Ethan snapped, “Go downstairs.”
Audrey’s mother flinched.
Then stayed.
Not brave yet.
Not enough.
But she stayed.
Ethan saw that too.
His world was shifting in small betrayals.
The bride no longer silent.
The groom no longer polite.
The mother no longer instantly obedient.
The evidence no longer hidden.
The phone still connected.
Liam spoke to Sophia.
“There may be additional witnesses in the hallway.”
Sophia replied, “Keep everyone separated. Preserve the original device.”
Ethan laughed once.
Sharp and ugly.
“You think a few recordings prove anything?”
Audrey looked at him.
“No.”
She stood slowly, robe closed, shoulders tense but lifted.
“They prove I knew I wasn’t crazy.”
The room went still.
That sentence did not sound like court.
It sounded like survival.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You were always dramatic.”
Liam stepped half a pace forward.
“Enough.”
No shouting.
No violence.
Just a line.
Ethan looked at him, then at Audrey.
“You don’t know what she was like as a child.”
Audrey answered quietly.
“I was afraid.”
Her mother covered her mouth.
Ethan’s jaw clenched.
He looked toward the laptop again.
The waveform still moved.
The device still recorded.
Liam’s phone still carried Sophia’s presence.
All the things Ethan depended on—privacy, hesitation, family shame—were thinning.
For the first time, Audrey saw him as he truly was.
Not enormous.
Not untouchable.
