PART 2

Thomas Carter died in the east study.

That was the official sentence.

Short.

Clean.

Cruel in its simplicity.

Fire in the mansion.

Smoke inhalation.

Body found near the locked study door.

Wife discovered unconscious in the hallway.

Adult son calls 911.

Tragic accident.

That was the version Miles wanted.

It almost worked.

The Carter mansion was old wealth wrapped in white marble, tall windows, polished wood, and silence that had learned to obey money.

Thomas had built half the family fortune through Carter Maritime.

He owned shipping warehouses, port contracts, and enough land to make men smile too carefully when they shook his hand.

Eleanor had been married to him for forty-three years.

People assumed she was decorative.

Thomas never did.

He called her his sharpest counsel.

His safest harbor.

His only honest board member.

Miles hated that.

Not openly.

Miles Carter hated with manners.

He was handsome, educated, and polished enough to turn greed into ambition.

He called his father outdated.

Called his mother sentimental.

Called the estate “underutilized.”

Thomas said no to him often.

No to risky acquisitions.

No to selling the old docks.

No to using the family trust to secure private loans.

No to Miles taking control before he earned it.

Then, six days before the police entered the foyer, Thomas called Eleanor from the east study.

She was upstairs packing a small bag for their anniversary trip.

His voice was strange.

Low.

Urgent.

“Ellie, where are you?”

“In the bedroom.”

“Do not come downstairs yet.”

Her heart stopped.

“Thomas?”

The line crackled.

Then she heard him cough.

“Something is wrong.”

“Smoke.”

Eleanor ran.

By the time she reached the main hallway, black smoke rolled beneath the study door.

She grabbed the handle.

Locked.

From the outside.

She screamed Thomas’s name.

Inside, he pounded once.

Then twice.

Then his voice came through the door, hoarse and breaking.

“Miles.”

Eleanor turned.

Miles stood at the end of the hallway.

Pale.

Still.

Watching.

“Open it!” she screamed.

Miles did not move fast enough.

May you like

Or maybe he did not intend to move at all.
