PART 3

Miles claimed he froze from shock.

That was the story he gave the firefighters.

The paramedics.

The neighbors.

The reporters outside the gate.

He said he heard Eleanor screaming and ran downstairs.

He said smoke blinded him.

He said he tried to force the door open.

He said he burned his hand trying to save his father.

The bandage around his palm made the story believable.

Almost.

Eleanor knew better.

She had seen him.

Not covered in smoke.

Not frantic.

Not burned.

Standing too far from the fire with the calm horror of a man watching a plan become real.

Then the smoke took her.

She remembered falling to her knees.

Remembered Thomas coughing behind the door.

Remembered Miles finally rushing forward when the security alarm began shrieking.

Remembered his hand closing around her shoulder.

Not to lift her.

To pull something from her coat pocket.

Thomas’s spare study key.

Then darkness.

When Eleanor woke in the hospital, Miles was sitting beside her bed with tears in his eyes and a lawyer in the hallway.

“Mom.”

His voice trembled perfectly.

“Dad is gone.”

Eleanor stared at him.

The world cracked open.

Thomas was gone.

But the way Miles watched her grief frightened her more than death should have allowed.

Before she could speak, he leaned close.

“The police will ask questions.”

“You were found near the study.”

“You were the only one with a key.”

Her throat burned from smoke.

She could barely breathe.

Miles took her hand.

Too gently.

“Don’t worry.”

“I’ll help you if you tell the truth.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“What truth?”

His eyes darkened.

“That you and Dad argued about the will.”

Eleanor tried to sit up.

Pain tore through her lungs.

Miles pressed her shoulder down.

“Careful, Mom.”

“You’re not well.”

Not well.

The first brick in the cage.

Later, Detective Bell came.

She asked about the study door.

The argument.

The inheritance.

The fire.

Eleanor wanted to tell her everything.

But then Miles stood outside the glass wall of the hospital room and held up Thomas’s wedding ring.

The one thing recovered from the study.

He mouthed two words.

Be careful.

Eleanor went silent.

Not because she was weak.

May you like

Because she realized Miles had already started building the story before his father’s ashes were cold.
