PART 4
Thomas’s burned phone came back to Eleanor by accident.
At least, that was what Miles believed.
The fire department logged every item recovered from the study.
A watch.
A cracked reading glass.
A metal pen.
A melted desk key.
A wedding ring.
And one severely damaged phone found beneath the fallen bookshelf.
Miles asked for all personal effects.
He said he was the acting executor.
He said his mother was sedated and confused.
Most people believed sons when they spoke confidently beside a grieving mother.
But Captain Ruiz from the fire department had served with Thomas years earlier on a harbor safety board.
He remembered Eleanor.
He remembered Thomas saying she had a better memory than any lawyer in Charleston.
So when Miles tried to take the evidence box, Ruiz refused.
“Fire investigation is still active.”
Miles smiled through clenched teeth.
“Of course.”
Two days later, Ruiz visited Eleanor privately.
He placed a sealed bag on her hospital tray.
“Mrs. Carter, this was logged as damaged property.”
Eleanor stared at the blackened phone.
Thomas’s phone.
Burned along the edges.
Screen cracked.
Back warped by heat.
Her hand shook.
“Why bring it to me?”
Ruiz looked toward the door.
“Because your son asked three times whether it still powered on.”
Eleanor’s pulse changed.
Ruiz lowered his voice.
“And because your husband had a habit of recording voice notes when he was worried.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Thomas did.
He recorded grocery reminders.
Business ideas.
Birthday thoughts for grandchildren they never had.
Angry notes about Miles after board meetings.
Eleanor took the bag.
“Can it be recovered?”
“Maybe.”
“Not by me.”
“By someone who knows what they’re doing.”
That night, Eleanor called Grace Whitman, Thomas’s oldest attorney.
Grace sent a forensic technician disguised as a home health aide.
The phone was too damaged to unlock normally.
But the memory chip survived.
The first recovered audio was static.
The second was Thomas coughing.
The third began with Eleanor’s name.
She listened once.
Then vomited into a hospital basin.
Not from weakness.
From the sound of her husband dying while trying to save her from their son.
The voicemail ended with three words.
“Check the safe.”
Eleanor understood then.

Thomas had left more than one truth behind.
