PART 7

Miles made his accusation the next morning.

He did it in the foyer because foyers are built for entrances, and Miles loved an entrance.

He called Detective Bell himself.

He called the family attorney.

He called two officers he claimed were needed because he feared his mother might destroy evidence.

Then he stood beneath the staircase and performed heartbreak.

“My father was going to change the will.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“She knew.”

Eleanor sat in the side chair near the flowers, pale but composed.

Miles continued.

“They argued.”

“She was the last person near the study.”

“She had the key.”

“She benefits from his death.”

Detective Bell let him talk.

That was her gift.

She gave liars space to build their own walls.

Eleanor watched Miles carefully.

He had dressed in charcoal gray.

Thomas’s favorite cufflinks gleamed at his wrists.

That was almost enough to make her flinch.

Almost.

Miles turned to the officers.

“My mother is grieving, but that doesn’t make her innocent.”

Eleanor looked up.

“Go on, Miles.”

He frowned.

“Tell them everything.”

The detective’s eyes moved to Eleanor’s purse.

Miles missed it.

He stepped closer to Eleanor.

“You always wanted control.”

Eleanor’s voice stayed calm.

“Did I?”

“You hated that Dad trusted me with the company.”

“He did not trust you with the company.”

Miles’ face tightened.

“He was confused.”

“There it is.”

The room sharpened around them.

Miles realized too late that anger had pulled him off script.

Detective Bell asked, “Mr. Carter, why would your father be confused?”

Miles swallowed.

“I mean emotionally.”

Eleanor opened her handbag.

His eyes dropped.

There.

Fear.

Pure and immediate.

Detective Bell stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, what exactly is in your purse?”

Eleanor removed the plastic sleeve.

The burned phone looked small in her hands.

Ugly.

Fragile.

Miraculous.

Miles laughed once.

“That thing is destroyed.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“No, Miles.”

“Only the parts you could reach.”

Detective Bell took the phone.

One officer quietly moved behind Miles.

The portable device connected.

Static filled the foyer.

Miles whispered, “This is illegal.”

Bell said, “Recovered evidence is not illegal because you dislike it.”

Then Thomas’s voice entered the room.

Eleanor… don’t trust Miles.

He trapped me inside.

May you like

Miles backed into the officer’s hand.
