PART 8
The voicemail did not end there.
That was what destroyed Miles.
He had hoped for one frightened sentence.
One unclear accusation.
One dying man’s confusion that a lawyer could later explain away.
But Thomas Carter had been calm even while smoke filled his lungs.
The audio crackled.
Then his voice returned, weaker but deliberate.
“Miles changed the lock.”
“He has the study key.”
“He said I should have given him control.”
A violent cough.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Miles looked at Detective Bell.
“My father was disoriented.”
The recording continued.
“He poured something near the curtains.”
“He thinks the fire will look electrical.”
Detective Bell’s face hardened.
One officer reached for Miles’ wrist.
Miles jerked away.
“I did not.”
Thomas’s voice came again.
“Ellie, check the greenhouse safe.”
“Give Bell the red folder.”
“She’ll know.”
The audio dissolved into static.
Then one final whisper.
“I love you.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
The foyer was silent.
Even the officers looked shaken.
Detective Bell removed the connector from the damaged phone and placed it back in the sleeve.
“Mr. Carter.”
Miles lifted both hands.
“Wait.”
Bell did not wait.
“You are being detained pending further investigation into the death of Thomas Carter.”
Miles looked at Eleanor.
For the first time, he stopped pretending.
“You did this.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“No.”
“Your father did.”
That broke something in him.
His face twisted.
“He was going to ruin me.”
Bell stepped closer.
“For what?”
Miles shut his mouth.
Too late.
The officers cuffed him.
He shouted for his attorney.
For the family lawyer.
For anyone still willing to confuse wealth with innocence.
No one moved fast enough.
Eleanor stood carefully.
Her legs trembled.
Detective Bell noticed and offered her arm.
Eleanor took it.
Not because she was weak.
Because grief had weight, and today she had carried too much of it.
Bell lowered her voice.
“Do you have the red folder?”
Eleanor nodded.
“In the greenhouse.”
Miles stopped struggling.
His head turned slowly.
He had not found it.
