“He flew home from his luxury second wedding… and found the entire house gone.”
Jaxon Reed stood in the middle of Maple Hollow Lane with both hands on his head, staring at the muddy rectangle where a house used to be.
Not damaged.
Not burned.
Not robbed.
Gone.
The white two-story home with the blue shutters, the wraparound porch, the rose bushes, the tire swing, the kitchen window where Ruby used to stand every morning with coffee.
Gone.
Only flattened earth remained.
Tire tracks cut through the mud.
Yellow grass bent under the weight of heavy equipment.
The foundation outline sat exposed like a scar.
Behind Jaxon, his new wife Blair stood beside the silver sedan in a beige sweater, still wearing the diamond ring from the Amalfi Coast wedding.
Her smile had not survived the driveway.
Marcus, Jaxon’s seventeen-year-old son, stood near the curb with a dark hoodie pulled tight around his face.
Lily, fifteen, stood beside him in gray, silent and pale.
The black SUV idled across the street.
Ruby sat inside it, beige cardigan folded neatly around her shoulders, one hand resting on the steering wheel.
Jaxon spun toward her.
His face was red with panic.
“What did you do to my house?!”
Ruby lowered the window slowly.
Her expression was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“It was never your house, Jaxon.”
Blair took one step away from him.
“You told me you owned this place.”
Jaxon’s mouth opened.
No answer came.
Marcus walked closer to the muddy edge, looking at the land where his bedroom had been.
“Dad…”
His voice shook.
“Where are we supposed to live?”
That question landed harder than Jaxon’s rage.
Ruby looked at her son through the open window.
For one second, pain crossed her face.
Then she looked back at Jaxon.
“You said you hated old things.”
She gave a small, controlled smile.
“So I moved mine.”
Then she eased the SUV forward.
Jaxon stood frozen beside the empty lot.
