Jaxon called the police himself.
That was his next mistake.
He announced it loudly, as if law enforcement would arrive, see mud, and arrest the nearest ex-wife.
Two officers came fifteen minutes later.
Jaxon rushed toward them.
“She stole my house.”
Officer Bennett looked at the empty lot.
Then at Ruby.
Then at Denise.
Denise handed him copies before Jaxon finished talking.
The officer read for less than a minute before his expression changed.
“Mr. Reed, it appears this is a civil property matter.”
Jaxon’s voice cracked.
“She moved the entire house.”
Officer Bennett looked at the permit.
“With approval.”
“She left us homeless.”
Ruby’s face tightened.
Denise answered for her.
“The children have legal residence available with their mother.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m going with Mom.”
Lily stepped beside him.
“Me too.”
Jaxon stared at them.
“You are not.”
Marcus looked at his father.
“You brought us back to a hole in the ground.”
The sentence hit the whole street.
Even Blair flinched.
Jaxon lowered his voice.
“Marcus, don’t do this.”
Marcus’s eyes filled with anger.
“You did it.”
Lily reached for Ruby’s hand.
Ruby took it.
That small movement broke something in Jaxon’s face.
Not love.
Control.
Blair looked around at the mud, the neighbors, the officers, the children choosing their mother.
Then she whispered, “Where am I supposed to go?”
Ruby looked at her.
For one second, Blair looked very young.
Not innocent.
But young.
Ruby answered honestly.
“That is a question you should have asked before marrying a man who promised you another woman’s home.”
Blair’s cheeks flushed.
Jaxon turned on Ruby.
“You are enjoying this.”
Ruby shook her head.
“No.”
“I would have enjoyed being respected.”
That silenced him more than anger could.
Officer Bennett asked if anyone needed to retrieve belongings from the lot.
Ruby said the remaining items had been cataloged and placed in storage as ordered.
Jaxon laughed bitterly.
“So you packed my things too?”
Denise replied, “Only the items proven to be yours.”
Ruby looked at Blair’s luggage.
