PART 4
Moving a house is not quick.
That was what everyone told Ruby.
It takes permits.
Engineers.
Utility crews.
Traffic control.
Insurance.
Police coordination.
A new site prepared in advance.
Ruby had all of it.
Because she had not been waiting for revenge.
She had been waiting for permission.
Two years before the divorce, after Jaxon began staying late at “client dinners,” Ruby bought five acres outside Cedar Ridge using money from her grandmother’s trust.
She told no one.
Not because she was planning to leave then.
Because some part of her already knew she might need somewhere the children could breathe.
The new land had oak trees, a creek, and a long gravel road hidden from the main highway.
Ruby had a foundation poured quietly.
Officially, it was for “future residential development.”
Unofficially, it was hope with concrete under it.
When Jaxon filed for divorce, Denise advised Ruby not to act emotionally.
“Let him make declarations,” Denise said.
“Men like him usually do.”
Jaxon did.
He declared the house his.
Declared Ruby unstable.
Declared Blair would be a “positive female influence” for Lily.
Declared Marcus needed to see his father “move forward.”
Declared the Italy wedding would be “healing for the family.”
Ruby saved every message.
Every voicemail.
Every threat.
Every photo Blair posted from Ruby’s kitchen with captions about “new beginnings.”
Then came the text.
I’m done with old things.
When Ruby showed Denise, the attorney read it twice.
Then looked up.
“Ruby, do you still want the house moved?”
Ruby folded her hands.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
Ruby thought of Marcus’s room.
Lily’s pencil marks on the laundry room doorframe.
Helen’s kitchen window.
The porch swing.
The magnolia tree.
“I don’t want to destroy it.”
Denise nodded.
“You want to take what is yours.”
Ruby looked at the text again.
“Yes.”
By Tuesday, the utilities were scheduled.
By Thursday, the city permit was approved.
By Friday, the crews arrived before sunrise.
By Saturday night, the house was lifted.
By Sunday morning, while Jaxon danced with Blair under Italian string lights, Ruby watched her grandmother’s house roll slowly down Maple Hollow Lane on steel beams and wheels.
She did not smile.
She cried.
Not because she was leaving.
May you like
Because she finally was not being left.
