PART 6

Blair learned the truth in pieces.

First, the house was gone.

Then Ruby said it was never Jaxon’s.

Then the pilot-lagged fog lifted from Blair’s face and humiliation took its place.

“You told me you owned this place.”

Jaxon turned on her.

“Not now.”

Blair stepped back.

“No.”

“You told me your ex was refusing to leave your house.”

Ruby parked the SUV but did not get out.

The window remained open.

The whole street could hear.

Jaxon lowered his voice.

“Blair.”

She looked at the muddy lot.

“You said the kids would have their rooms.”

Marcus laughed without humor.

“We did.”

Lily finally spoke.

Her voice was small but sharp.

“Until Dad gave them away.”

Jaxon swung toward her.

“Lily, stop.”

Ruby’s hand tightened on the steering wheel.

“She can talk.”

Jaxon pointed at Ruby.

“You poisoned them.”

Ruby opened the door and stepped out.

The air was cold after the rain.

Her boots sank slightly into the muddy edge of the street.

She walked around the SUV with the calm of a woman who had finished crying before the scene began.

“No, Jaxon.”

“You humiliated them in Italy.”

Marcus looked down.

Lily wiped her face with her sleeve.

Blair turned slowly toward her new husband.

“What happened in Italy?”

Jaxon’s father, who had arrived in the silver sedan with Blair’s luggage, muttered, “This is not the place.”

Ruby looked at him.

“It was the place when you all planned to move in.”

He went silent.

Blair’s voice shook.

“Jaxon.”

“What happened?”

Marcus answered before his father could lie.

“He made us stand beside Blair at the wedding and called us ‘the new family.’”

Lily added, “He said Mom needed to learn she was replaceable.”

Blair’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Not yet.

But discomfort.

The kind that arrives when the fantasy starts smelling like cruelty.

Ruby looked at Jaxon.

“I did not poison your children.”

“You fed them the truth in public until they could taste it.”

Jaxon stepped toward her.

“Where is the house?”

Ruby smiled faintly.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

May you like

“Somewhere your name is not on anything.”
