PART 2

Three weeks earlier, Jaxon had sent Ruby a text from the airport lounge.

It arrived at 2:13 in the morning.

Ruby remembered the time because she had been awake at the kitchen table with an unsigned school form in front of her and divorce papers beside it.

The message was short.

Brutal.

Confident.

I’m done with old things.

The kids and I leave for Italy tomorrow.

Blair and I will be married by the weekend.

When we come back, I expect you and your boxes gone.

Ruby stared at the screen for a long time.

Not because she was surprised.

Because the cruelty was finally neat enough to fit on one screen.

For twenty-two years, Ruby had made the house a home while Jaxon called himself the provider.

She painted the porch.

Paid the back taxes when Jaxon’s business failed.

Refinanced her grandmother’s life insurance to repair the roof.

Worked nights doing bookkeeping while he played the charming father at barbecues.

When the divorce began, Jaxon told everyone the house was “the marital home.”

He said Ruby was being emotional.

He said she would get a fair settlement.

He said the children needed stability.

Then he brought Blair to the house while Ruby was still packing dishes.

Blair walked through the living room like she was inspecting furniture she had already chosen.

She touched the staircase railing and said, “We’ll modernize all of this.”

Ruby said nothing.

That was becoming her talent.

Jaxon mistook silence for defeat.

He always had.

The day before he flew to Europe, he stood in the driveway with Marcus and Lily while Blair loaded designer luggage into the car.

He did not look at Ruby when he spoke.

“When we come back, I don’t want drama.”

Ruby looked at the porch.

The porch her grandfather had built by hand before Jaxon ever knew her name.

“What do you want?”

Jaxon smiled.

“Space.”

Blair laughed softly.

“Fresh start.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Lily looked at the ground.

Ruby nodded.

Then Jaxon added, “Don’t make me force you out of my house.”

That was when Ruby smiled for the first time in weeks.

Not because she was amused.

May you like

Because he had finally said the exact lie her lawyer had been waiting for.
