“Howard wanted permanent spousal control.”
“Yes.”
“But both of you need my signature.”

“What happens if I sign nothing?”

“It may.”
“Could witnesses be endangered?”

“Could that danger be exaggerated to frighten me?”
“Yes.”
Mara’s honesty cut through the room.

Alexander agreed.
He did not look relieved.

Police raided Samuel Price’s cabin.

Samuel had not begun with David.

His stated goal was employee ownership.

Samuel appeared older, alive, and calm.
“Anna, your father will tell you institutions need time. Howard will tell you families need authority. David will tell you love deserves another chance. They all ask you to surrender choice so their structures survive.”
Anna watched closely.
Samuel continued.
“Do not sign. Let Rowan collapse into its workers’ hands.”
Then his tone changed.
“But first, remove Alexander.”
The video displayed documents accusing Alexander of hiding funds connected to Margaret’s investigation.
Some appeared genuine.
Others could not be verified.
Samuel had mixed truth with manipulation, ensuring every revelation damaged trust.
The final file showed Mara entering Samuel’s cabin two weeks before Christmas.
She carried Anna’s medical records.
Mara stared at the screen.
“I don’t remember that.”
Her vehicle records confirmed the trip.
Her phone had been switched off for four hours.
A medical examination revealed a small scar behind her ear.
Doctors found an implanted device designed to deliver timed medication.
Someone had been controlling periods of her consciousness.
Anna felt horror rather than accusation.
Mara had been used as a living credential.
The implant contained a data transmitter.
Its most recent instruction had arrived from inside St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
Samuel was not only alive.
He was somewhere within the hospital network.
Then the fetal monitor beside Anna’s bed changed.
A new message appeared where the heartbeat numbers had been.
