David was barred from entering the maternity floor, but his attorneys sent messages every hour requesting access, mediation, and a confidential marital meeting.
Anna refused all three.
At noon, police delivered the restored house footage.
The recording began before guests arrived.
Sylvia stood in the kitchen wearing an expensive red dress while Anna prepared vegetables.
“You’ll eat after everyone leaves,” Sylvia said.
Anna continued cutting carrots.
“I’m sitting with David.”
“You were not included in the seating plan.”
“It’s my home too.”
Sylvia smiled.
“Not after tonight.”
The footage moved to the dining room.
David and Howard reviewed printed papers near the Christmas tree.
David asked, “What if she calls Alexander?”
Howard answered, “She hasn’t spoken to him in three years.”
“And if she does?”
“Alexander will freeze before he acts. Remind him of Margaret.”
Anna paused the video.
Her mother’s name.
Alexander stood near the window, motionless.
“What happened to her?” Anna asked.
She knew the official history.
Her mother died in a car accident when Anna was eight. Alexander adopted her afterward and rarely discussed the investigation.
Howard’s words implied something else.
Alexander sat beside the bed.
“Margaret discovered the first guardianship scheme seventeen years before David married you. Howard and David’s father were transferring property from vulnerable clients through fraudulent medical evaluations.”
“She came to you?”
“Yes.”
“And you stopped them?”
“No.”
The answer remained in the room.
Alexander had been a young appellate judge. He feared that personally intervening would compromise the criminal investigation.
He advised Margaret to remain silent while federal agents gathered evidence.
Howard learned she was cooperating.
Three days later, her car left the road.
David’s father died months afterward under suspicious circumstances.
Howard survived.
“You chose the investigation,” Anna whispered.
“I believed waiting would protect more victims.”
“Mom died while you waited.”
“Yes.”
“Did Howard know I knew that?”
“You didn’t know.”
“Then who told David?”
Alexander looked toward Mara.
His attorney had access to every sealed family record.
Mara did not flinch.
“I never shared it.”
Rebecca continued the video.
Howard instructed David to use the old failure against Alexander.
“If the call happens, tell him the firm’s lenders will collapse if he turns a domestic dispute into public war.”
David laughed.
“He won’t risk twelve hundred employees for Anna.”
Sylvia entered.
“And what if she becomes truly ill?”
Howard answered:
“Paul will stabilize her after the papers are signed.”
Anna gripped the blanket.
They had understood the danger.
They considered medical care something to provide after obtaining her signature.
The footage reached the assault.
Sylvia shoved Anna.
David blocked Rebecca when she attempted to enter the kitchen.
Howard whispered to another guest:
“Give her sixty seconds.”
Sixty seconds of shaking on a tile floor.
Sixty seconds in which every person measured career risk against a pregnant woman’s body.
Anna stopped the video.
“I want every guest’s name.”
Rebecca gave her the seating chart.
Mara began preparing preservation notices.
Alexander said nothing.
Anna faced him.
“You do not get to fix this by destroying their careers.”
“What do you want?”
“I want them asked what they saw while they can still decide whether to tell the truth voluntarily.”
“And if they lie?”
“Then the evidence speaks.”
Alexander nodded.
He was learning, painfully, to follow rather than lead.
A hospital technician entered with a report from Anna’s phone.
The device had recorded more than the Christmas dinner.
A hidden application had been running for six months.
It captured her location, microphone activity, pregnancy appointments, and calls.
The application’s administrator was David.
But the original installation certificate belonged to Rowan Legal Holdings.
