He never entered the room.
Mara contacted hospital administration.
Vane claimed David had asked him to prepare a preliminary assessment as Anna’s spouse.
The hospital suspended his access pending review.
Police searched his office and found a sealed envelope addressed to Sylvia.
Inside was a script.
Sylvia was instructed to tell clinicians that Anna had become increasingly suspicious, hidden money, and threatened to flee with the baby.
David was instructed to appear frightened but compassionate.
Howard would provide legal support.
The Christmas event had a second phase.
If Anna reached a public hospital, Vane would convert the domestic assault into evidence of psychiatric instability.
Mara’s decision to bring Anna to St. Catherine’s appeared catastrophic.
“Why this hospital?” Anna asked again.
“Your mother helped establish its maternal-trauma center,” Mara answered.
“And Vane?”
“He joined last year.”
“Who recommended him?”
The hospital board records identified the recommending organization.
Rowan Family Foundation.
Another corrupted grant.
Alexander looked physically ill.
Howard had planted Vane inside Margaret’s own medical program.
The system designed to protect Anna had been slowly occupied by the people targeting her.
Mara offered her resignation.
Anna refused it.
“Resigning would make you unavailable when we need answers.”
“You still trust me?”
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
“But trust is not required for evidence.”
Mara accepted that too.
An outside physician reviewed Anna’s chart and removed the psychiatric draft.
The medical findings supported trauma, severe stress, and pregnancy complications—not psychosis.
The hospital preserved Vane’s access logs.
Rebecca arrived with more files from Howard’s office.
She had found an internal project named ORPHAN ADVANTAGE.
The title referred to Anna.
Howard believed her lack of living biological parents made her easier to isolate and discredit.
The project described Alexander as an “emotionally compromised adoptive guardian.”
David was instructed to repeat that Anna had no family until she accepted the story herself.
Anna had once corrected him early in their marriage.
“Alexander raised me,” she said.
David responded:
“An uncle isn’t a father.”
Eventually, she stopped correcting him.
The project’s final page listed the expected participants in the Christmas event.
David.
Sylvia.
Howard.
Vane.
And Mara Whitfield.
Mara stared at her own name.
Her assigned task:
Ensure subject reaches St. Catherine’s, then deliver Alexander for reputational containment.
Someone expected Mara to follow the exact path she had taken.
Either the plan accurately predicted her—
or she had once agreed to participate.
The document carried her digital signature.
Mara said nothing for several seconds.
Then she removed a necklace from beneath her blouse.
A small medical identification tag hung from it.
“Three years ago, I woke in St. Catherine’s after a car accident. I lost six weeks of memory.”
Anna stared at her.
The accident occurred one month before David proposed.
Mara’s credentials were first used to issue the surveillance software during that missing period.
Howard may have compromised more than her accounts.
He may have used her while she could not remember.
