She thanked him.

David knew exactly how isolated she had become.
“Who issued the certificate?” Anna asked.
The audit identified a Rowan employee account belonging to Mara Whitfield.

Mara remained calm.
“My credentials were copied.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“When?”
“Two years ago, during the Boston office breach.”
“That incident was declared contained.”
“By Howard Vale’s cybersecurity consultant.”
Howard had investigated the breach he likely created.
Mara surrendered her phone, laptop, access card, and biometric token voluntarily.
“Search everything.”
Anna watched her.
“You don’t seem surprised.”
“I knew David had information he should not possess. I did not know how much.”
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I sent the letters.”
“After the application was installed.”
“Yes.”
Mara had suspected a leak but lacked proof. She feared accusing David without evidence would push Anna farther away from Alexander.
Once again, protection became silence.
Anna was growing tired of intelligent people explaining why they had waited.
The outside audit discovered that David’s firm accessed Rowan’s witness-protection tools through a joint legal technology agreement signed seven years earlier.
The person who approved that agreement was Howard Vale.
The Rowan executive who countersigned was Alexander.
He did not remember the specific clause among hundreds of acquisition documents.
Howard had built a legal bridge into Rowan’s systems long before David met Anna.
“Was our meeting arranged?” Anna asked.
Alexander looked confused.
“What meeting?”
“The charity law lecture where I met David.”
The event was sponsored jointly by Rowan Legal Holdings and Howard’s firm.
David had been added to the speaker list forty-eight hours before the program.
Anna had received a personal invitation from Mara’s office.
Mara checked her archive.
The invitation was sent under her name, but she had not written it.
Someone used her account to place Anna and David in the same room.
David approached her near the coat check.
He apologized after spilling coffee on her program.
He made her laugh.

The entries began after his first date with Anna.

The final report was written two nights before Christmas.

The supervisor’s name had been erased.
