Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the MonitorAlexander refused to leave.

The fetal monitor displayed another message.
IF HE STAYS, THE RECORDS RELEASE UNFILTERED.
Mara understood first.
Samuel possessed witness identities and sealed victim files. An unfiltered release could expose people hiding from violent offenders.
Anna looked at her father.
“Go into the hallway.”
“No.”
“This is my room.”
“He is threatening you.”
“He is threatening people who aren’t here. Go.”
Alexander obeyed.
The doors unlocked long enough for him to step outside, then sealed again.
Mara, Anna, and the independent nurse remained.
The monitor changed to a video feed.
Samuel Price sat inside a hospital control room.
“I’m sorry about the Christmas injury,” he said.
Anna stared at him.
“You created the plan.”
“I created a path that would expose Howard.”
“You knew Sylvia would push me.”
“I expected intimidation, not physical violence.”
“You prepared a hospital trap.”
“Vane worked for Howard, not me.”
“You used Mara.”
Regret crossed his face.
“She volunteered years ago.”
“Not to lose her memory.”
“No.”
Samuel had implanted the device after Mara discovered Howard was using her credentials. He claimed it allowed her to enter his network without remembering information Howard could force from her.
Mara looked sick.
“You told me it was temporary.”
Samuel nodded.
Then he admitted he continued using it after she withdrew consent.
He believed her access remained necessary.
Protection became ownership again.
Anna asked why Samuel paid David.
“To document Howard’s operation.”
“You financed my courtship.”
“I needed David close enough to reveal the guardianship scheme.”
“You let me marry him.”
“I believed he had genuinely abandoned Howard.”
“Everyone believed love would repair him.”
Samuel lowered his eyes.
Anna continued.
“You watched Christmas.”
“Yes.”
“You could have called an ambulance.”
“I triggered Alexander’s emergency line.”
“After I was on the floor.”
“Yes.”
There was no hero on the screen.
Only another intelligent man who believed observation made him different from the people committing the harm.
Samuel offered Anna a choice.
He would transfer every verified criminal file to independent authorities and every protected identity to sealed advocates.
In exchange, Anna would allow Rowan Legal Holdings to restructure immediately at the baby’s birth.
“No exemptions. No delay.”
“And if the transition exposes someone?”
“I have separated the files.”
“Who verified your separation?”
“No one.”
“Then you are asking me to trust your private judgment.”
“Yes.”
“I won’t.”
Samuel’s expression tightened.
“You would preserve Alexander’s company?”
“I would preserve other people’s right not to become collateral in your war.”
The monitor went dark.
Hospital security traced the feed to an abandoned sublevel.
Police entered and found the control room empty.
Samuel had transmitted remotely.
But one object remained on the desk.
Anna’s original birth certificate.
The father’s name was different from the official record.
Her biological father was not Michael Carter, the man she had mourned.
The certificate named Samuel Price.
Anna stared at the image.
Mara whispered, “It could be forged.”
Samuel’s voice returned through the room speaker.
“It isn’t.”
Alexander heard from the hallway.
His face changed through the glass.
Anna understood why Samuel’s obsession had always felt personal.
He was not merely trying to reshape Rowan Legal Holdings.
