Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO CALLED HERSELF HIS MOTHERCeleste called at 3:17 a.m.

The number appeared as blocked, but Hannah traced it to a private hotel near LaGuardia Airport.

She was not in Switzerland.

Maya placed the call on speaker inside a secured interview room.

Eli sat beneath a blanket with his injured side wrapped.

“Mom?”

Celeste began crying.

“Eli, listen carefully. You need to leave the federal building.”

“Why?”

“Victor has people there.”

“We know.”

“No, you don’t understand. The drive was designed to be found.”

Maya and Hannah exchanged a look.

Celeste claimed Daniel Mercer created the flash drive before his death. Victor later added false documents to it, hoping Eli would eventually uncover the device and take it to authorities.

Opening the drive activated a tracking signal and identified which federal agents were investigating Atlas.

Victor had turned Daniel’s evidence into a trap.

“Is the weapons ledger real?” Maya asked.

“Yes.”

“The passport network?”

“Yes.”

“The murders?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Most of it.”

Maya’s expression hardened.

Truth mixed with selected falsehood could compromise every prosecution.

Eli looked toward the speaker.

“Did Victor drug you?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

“Did you help him?”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more because she did not soften it.

Celeste had discovered Victor’s crimes seven years earlier. She planned to take Eli and leave. Victor showed her evidence that Daniel had also participated in early Atlas operations.

He threatened to frame Daniel as the sole architect and expose Eli as heir to a criminal enterprise.

Celeste stayed.

Then staying became cooperation.

She signed school authorizations, trust amendments, medical forms, and surveillance requests.

She told herself she was limiting Victor’s damage.

Victor rewarded her with security and punished resistance through medication.

“You knew he killed Dad?” Eli asked.

“I suspected.”

“You married him anyway.”

“Two years after Daniel died.”

“You brought his murderer into our home.”

“I didn’t know for certain then.”

“When did you know?”

“Five years ago.”

Eli closed his eyes.

She had tucked him into bed while knowing.

She had defended Victor during every argument.

She had told Eli grief made him unfair.

Maya asked where Celeste was.

“I can’t tell you.”

“We already know the hotel.”

Celeste’s breathing changed.

Then a door opened near her.

Victor spoke in the background.

“You always were terrible at following simple instructions.”

The line remained active.

Celeste screamed.

Furniture crashed.

Eli stood despite the pain.

Maya pushed him back into the chair and signaled the tactical team.

Victor came onto the phone.

“Good evening, Eli.”

“Let her go.”

“You should be more careful about calling her innocent.”

“I didn’t call her innocent.”

Victor laughed.

For the first time, Eli’s refusal to defend his mother blindly seemed to surprise him.

“You stole something that belongs to me.”

“The company belongs to me.”

“Daniel told you?”

“The drive did.”

“Daniel lied about many things.”

“Did he lie when he recorded you ordering his death?”

Victor became quiet.

Then he said, “Ask Maya Carter why she was standing on the dock that night.”

Eli turned toward her.

Maya’s face changed.

“I was a junior customs investigator,” she said.

“You never told me.”

“I didn’t know your father was the victim until tonight.”

Victor continued.

“She saw Daniel before the explosion. She watched him board the warehouse ferry and failed to stop him.”

Maya took the phone.

“You arranged the dock blast.”

“I arranged many exits.”

“Where is Celeste?”

“Still deciding which son she loves.”

Eli stared.

“Which son?”

The line disconnected.

The tactical team reached the hotel room.

It was empty.

Blood marked the carpet.

A broken chair lay near the window.

No Victor.

No Celeste.

Inside the bathroom, agents found a photograph of Celeste holding two infant boys.

One was Eli.

The other child wore a bracelet labeled JONAH MERCER.

Jonah Hale—the friend kidnapped from the harbor—was not merely another student.

He might be Daniel and Celeste’s biological son.

Eli’s brother.

A note beneath the photograph read:

May you like

ONE HEIR FOR THE TRUST. ONE HEIR FOR ATLAS.

👉 Celeste admitted years of cooperation with Victor, while the hidden photograph revealed Jonah may be Eli’s brother and a second heir raised inside another family.
