Chapter 6 - THE SCHOOL BENEATH THE SCHOOLMaya refused to trade Eli.

Eli refused to remain behind.

“You can use me without giving him control.”

“That sentence is how hostages become bodies,” Maya said.

“He wants both heirs alive until the trust transfers.”

“Unless he has another way to take it.”

Eli remembered the sealed incompetency hearing.

The judge convened through secure video at noon.

Maya presented the assault evidence, poisoned medication, forged medical reports, and the underground clinic.

The judge suspended Victor’s guardianship petition.

Eli remained legally competent.

Jonah’s earlier psychiatric order was canceled.

Victor had lost the easiest legal path.

That made the hostage more dangerous.

Agents mapped the underground school facility. Three exits connected to subway maintenance tunnels and a neighboring church.

Victor knew federal tactics and had internal cameras.

A direct breach could trigger gas release into Jonah’s room.

Hannah found an older school network installed by Daniel Mercer before his death.

Eli’s father had helped design the academy’s security system when the building housed an Atlas training center.

One emergency pathway remained invisible to Victor’s current software.

It required a Mercer biometric signature.

Eli’s blood.

Maya hated the idea.

Eli placed one finger against the scanner under controlled supervision.

The hidden system opened an analog service corridor.

Agents entered without triggering Victor’s cameras.

Eli remained in the command van.

Through the body-camera feed, he watched officers reach Jonah’s floor.

The chair was empty.

Victor had moved him again.

On the wall, Victor had written:

YOU USED DANIEL’S DOOR. NOW ASK WHO BUILT IT.

Maya found an old video archive inside the analog system.

Daniel Mercer appeared on screen.

He was younger, alive, and standing beside Victor.

“We need candidates who travel without scrutiny,” Daniel said.

“Diplomatic families?” Victor asked.

“Students are better. No one searches a school blazer.”

Eli felt sick.

His father had helped create the student-courier program.

The recording continued.

Daniel objected when Victor proposed stolen identities and coercion. He wanted voluntary internships carrying legitimate encrypted corporate material.

Victor wanted weapons and forged passports.

Atlas began with both men.

Daniel was not innocent.

He became a whistleblower only after benefiting from the system.

Maya did not soften it.

“Your father helped build the first version.”

Eli looked at the screen.

“He also tried to stop it.”

“Yes.”

“Both are true.”

“Yes.”

The words hurt.

They also felt cleaner than family mythology.

Another archive showed Daniel creating the Mercer twin trust. He believed separating the boys protected them from Victor.

Celeste objected.

She wanted both children.

Daniel overruled her.

Victor exploited the division.

Even Eli’s father had made an enormous choice without consent, calling it safety.

The analog system contained a final audio file recorded hours before Daniel’s dock death.

“Eli remains with Celeste,” Daniel said. “Jonah goes to the Hales. If I survive the transfer, I reunite them.”

He did not survive.

Or everyone believed he did not.

The file metadata showed later access.

Someone opened it three months ago using Daniel Mercer’s biometric code.

Maya stared.

“That should be impossible.”

Eli thought of the disappearing folder, Victor’s warning, and the remote deletions.

“My father might be alive.”

Before Maya answered, the school lights failed.

The command van lost power.

A subway explosion sounded beneath the street.

Smoke rose from a maintenance entrance two blocks away.

Agents reported a man escaping with Jonah through the tunnel.

Security cameras captured the driver of the waiting car.

Celeste.

She opened the rear door for Victor and Jonah.

Then she looked directly toward a traffic camera and mouthed:

Follow me.

Was she helping Victor?

Or guiding authorities?

The vehicle traveled downtown and entered the Holland Tunnel.

Maya prepared pursuit.

Hannah stopped her.

“The plate belongs to a federal surveillance car.”

The vehicle had been issued to Maya’s own supervisor, Deputy Director Owen Shaw.
