“My vehicle was stolen.”
Maya placed the traffic image before him.
“How?”
“A duplicate key.”
“From a secured garage?”
“Yes.”
“Why was Victor’s attorney recorded entering your office last month?”
Shaw looked toward Eli.
“This interview should not occur in front of a minor.”
“This minor owns the company your agents failed to investigate for twelve years.”
Shaw ordered Eli removed.
Maya refused.
The room divided instantly.
Officers loyal to Shaw stood near the doors. Hannah and Jordan remained beside Maya.
Shaw claimed the flash drive had compromised federal systems. He ordered it transferred to headquarters and placed Maya under administrative review for opening unverified evidence inside an active unit.
The command sounded procedurally reasonable.
That made it dangerous.
Eli recognized Victor’s favorite method.
Use official language to make surrender feel responsible.
Maya asked Shaw one question.
“Why did you investigate Daniel Mercer’s dock death?”
“I supervised customs coordination.”
“Why is your name missing from the final report?”
“Administrative error.”
“Why did Victor send you three million dollars through Halcyon Consulting?”
Shaw’s expression changed.
Jordan had found the transfer minutes earlier.
Shaw reached toward his jacket.
Federal officers raised weapons.
He froze.
The deputy director insisted the payments funded undercover operations. No authorization supported that claim.
Then the building alarms activated.
Every evidence-room lock opened simultaneously.
The original flash drive sat inside a shielded case.
A masked officer entered through a secure service door, seized the case, and ran.
Hannah triggered manual lockdown.
The thief removed the mask near the stairwell.
Aaron Hale.
Jonah’s father had escaped federal interview custody.
He carried the drive toward the underground parking garage.
Eli stepped into the corridor before Maya could stop him.
Aaron saw him.
For one second, shame crossed his face.
“Where is Jonah?” Eli demanded.
“I’m trying to get him back.”
“By giving Victor the evidence?”
“He said he would release him.”
“He lies.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Aaron’s hands shook.
“Because knowing doesn’t make me less afraid.”
Maya approached with her weapon lowered but ready.
“Put the case down.”
Aaron looked toward the garage door.
A red light flashed on the evidence case.
Remote erasure began.
The original drive would wipe itself if it left the secure building.
Aaron panicked and dropped it.
Hannah recovered the case.
The files remained intact.
Shaw used the distraction to run.
Jordan tackled him before he reached the stairwell.
Both men were detained.
The federal leak appeared contained.
Then Maya’s phone rang.
Celeste.
She spoke from inside the moving car.
“Victor thinks Shaw still controls your unit. He doesn’t know you arrested him.”
“Where are you?”
“Approaching Pier Forty-Six.”
“Is Jonah alive?”
“Yes.”
“Are you helping Victor?”
“I’m helping whoever keeps both boys breathing.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only honest one.”
Celeste had persuaded Victor she could deliver Eli through the Mercer trust. She was driving toward a private yacht owned by Atlas.
Victor planned to leave the country before the boys’ birthday.
Jonah was conscious but restrained in the back.
Celeste wanted agents to intercept at the pier.
Maya asked why Victor trusted her.
“Because I betrayed Eli first.”
The words landed without excuse.
Celeste had told Victor where Eli hid school records, who his friends were, and when he accessed the townhouse study.
She helped Victor discover the copied drive.
Then she gave Eli enough time to escape into the rain.
She played both sides.
Not cleanly.
Not heroically.
Maya sent tactical teams to the pier.
Eli remained inside the secure unit.
A maritime camera showed Victor’s car arriving.
Celeste exited.
Victor pulled Jonah from the rear seat.
Before officers moved, another vehicle stopped beside them.
A silver-haired man stepped out.
Eli stared at the monitor.
The face resembled old photographs of Daniel Mercer.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
Victor smiled and shook his hand.
Daniel embraced Jonah.
Then looked directly toward the camera.
