Chapter 5 - THE TWO MERCER BOYSAaron and Diane Hale were taken into federal custody before sunrise.
They denied kidnapping Jonah.
They also denied knowing he might be a Mercer.
Diane broke first.
Seventeen years earlier, she worked as a nurse at St. Matthew’s Hospital. Celeste gave birth to twins after a complicated pregnancy.
Victor, then Daniel’s business partner, arrived with forged emergency orders claiming one infant had died.
The second boy disappeared from the nursery.
Diane found him inside a transport bassinet and confronted Victor.
He offered her a choice.
Raise the child as her own.
Or allow him to vanish into Atlas custody.
Diane and Aaron took the baby.
They named him Jonah.
“Why didn’t you tell Celeste?” Maya asked.
“Victor said Daniel ordered the separation.”
“Did you believe him?”
“For a while.”
“And later?”
Diane looked down.
“Later we loved Jonah and were afraid someone would take him.”
Protection became another word for possession.
Aaron admitted working with Victor’s port network. He accepted money and special customs authority in exchange for keeping Jonah’s identity hidden.
When Jonah began questioning missing students at Eli’s school, Aaron warned Victor.
He believed Victor would frighten the boys.
Instead, Victor’s people abducted his son.
Eli watched the interrogation through secure glass.
Diane had loved Jonah.
Aaron had betrayed him.
Both truths remained.
Maya asked whether Jonah knew about Eli.
“No,” Diane said. “But he was always drawn to him.”
The boys met at school at age thirteen. Their friendship appeared accidental.
School records showed Victor arranged Jonah’s scholarship.
He had placed the brothers together deliberately.
Why?
The Mercer trust contained a twin-heir clause.
If Daniel had two surviving sons, company ownership divided equally at eighteen.
Victor needed both heirs declared incompetent, dead, or under his control.
Eli had been raised inside Victor’s home.
Jonah had been controlled through Aaron’s port dependence.
The school became the place where Victor could monitor them together.
The boiler-room attack targeted both boys.
Jonah tried to stop the assault. Security officers dragged him away before Eli regained consciousness.
The students who struck Eli had been ordered to create visible injuries.
Victor planned to use both boys’ “violent school incident” to support medical guardianship petitions.
Jonah’s petition had already been approved under his forged identity.
He was legally classified as a runaway psychiatric patient.
The government databases instructed police to return him to a Vale-owned treatment center if found.
Victor converted law enforcement into a retrieval system.
Hannah traced the refrigerated truck from Newark through toll cameras. It entered a private airfield in Westchester.
A jet departed minutes later for Montreal.
Passenger list:
Matthew Langley.
Celeste Langley.
Dr. Raymond Locke.
Jonah had been moved with Eli’s mother and the doctor who signed the incompetency report.
Victor was not listed.
He likely traveled under another stolen identity.
Canadian authorities intercepted the plane after landing.
It contained Dr. Locke and two sedated adult decoys.
No Celeste.
No Jonah.
The passenger images had been generated from passport scans.
The jet was another distraction.
Inside Dr. Locke’s briefcase, agents found medical evaluations for both boys.
Eli’s report described permanent hearing damage and violent paranoia.
Jonah’s described dissociative behavior and false beliefs about his family.
Both had been written before the boiler-room attack.
The injuries were planned to match existing diagnoses.
Dr. Locke demanded immunity.
Maya refused but promised to document cooperation.
He revealed Victor maintained a private treatment facility beneath Langley Academy.
Students selected for Atlas operations were evaluated, threatened, or drugged there.
Jonah had been taken below the school.
Eli stared.
The police had searched the campus after the attack.
They found nothing because the headmaster denied any underground rooms existed.
Federal agents entered the school at noon.
Behind the boiler room stood a disguised elevator.
It descended four levels.
The facility contained medical beds, surveillance equipment, passport scanners, and photographs of dozens of students.
One room held Jonah’s blazer and bloodied shirt.
Another contained Celeste’s purse.
A third held a live video monitor.
Jonah appeared strapped inside a chair.
Victor stood behind him.
“You have one hour,” Victor said through the screen. “Bring Eli to the school, or the second heir loses more than his hearing.”
Eli stepped toward the monitor.
Jonah lifted his head.
Even bruised and terrified, he shouted one word.
“Don’t!”
