Chapter 1 - The Fall He Had Already ExplainedThirty floors above Manhattan, Adrian Voss pressed Sofia’s bloodied fingers against the balcony rail.

Below them, the city glittered with indifferent beauty. Headlights flowed between towers. Tiny yellow taxis moved through the avenues. Far beneath the penthouse, people laughed outside restaurants, unaware that a woman was hanging above them with only one hand between life and death.
Adrian bent over the railing.
His face no longer resembled the husband who had once promised Sofia she would never feel poor or powerless again. His eyes were cold, his breathing controlled.
“Did you think a peasant could survive in my world?”
He peeled her fingers away one by one.
Sofia’s left hand slipped.
Her right hand remained hooked around the metal edge, her torn fingertips leaving dark streaks across the polished steel.
Three months earlier, she would have begged him.
One month earlier, she might have screamed.
Tonight, she looked beyond his shoulder.
A bronze falcon sat above the balcony doors. To Adrian, it was merely another expensive sculpture selected by his interior designer.
To Sofia, it was a hidden 4K camera.
Its mechanical eye had watched Adrian admit to falsifying company records, bribing a medical examiner, and arranging the death of a man who threatened to expose him.
It had also recorded him pushing his wife over the railing.
Sofia smiled.
Adrian’s certainty cracked.
“What?”
“You should’ve checked what was beneath me.”
She deliberately released her final hand.
For one endless second, there was no balcony, no city, and no pain.
Only cold air.
Then her back struck reinforced glass.
The impact forced every breath from her lungs.
A web of fractures spread across the maintenance awning one floor below, but the panels held. Sofia rolled toward the steel frame as glass dust scattered around her.
Above, Adrian leaned over the railing.
His mouth opened in horror.
“How are you still alive?”
Sofia’s ribs screamed when she moved.
She found the concealed emergency switch beneath the awning frame and slammed her palm against it.
Steel shutters exploded from the penthouse walls.
They sealed the balcony doors before Adrian could retreat inside. Sirens rose from the avenue as the building’s emergency network transmitted a silent distress call.
Adrian spun toward the bronze falcon.
The camera rotated away from his reaching hand.
Sofia pressed an encrypted recorder against her chest.
“The tower recorded your entire confession.”
Beneath the awning, a hidden door opened.
Daniel Cross stood in the darkness of a concealed surveillance room. He was forty-six, broad-shouldered, and dressed like a maintenance supervisor rather than the federal investigator he had once been.
Behind him, dozens of monitors displayed every angle of the penthouse.
One showed Adrian pounding against the sealed shutters.
Another showed the private elevator rising toward the thirtieth floor.
Daniel lifted a radio.
“We have him. Open the penthouse door.”
The elevator chimed behind Adrian.
He turned.
The doors began sliding apart.
Sofia expected police officers.
Instead, Lucille Voss stepped into the penthouse.
Adrian’s mother wore a silver evening gown beneath a black coat. Two private security men followed her. Neither carried a visible badge.
Lucille looked through the glass doors at her son trapped on the balcony.
Then she glanced directly toward the hidden falcon camera.
She knew exactly where it was.
“Daniel,” Sofia whispered, “she knows about the room.”
Lucille removed a brass key from her handbag and inserted it into the penthouse control panel.
The shutters began trembling.
Daniel seized Sofia beneath the shoulders and dragged her through the hidden doorway seconds before the awning shifted under her weight.
“She has a founder override,” he said.
“Who gave it to her?”
“Your father.”
Sofia froze despite the pain.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
Daniel looked toward the monitors.
On-screen, Lucille released Adrian from the balcony. She pressed a handkerchief against the blood on the railing, then placed it inside her handbag.

“Apparently,” Daniel said, “death didn’t stop him from preparing for tonight.”
👉 Sofia survived Adrian’s fall, but his mother possessed a secret authority created by Sofia’s supposedly dead father.
