Chapter 9 - The Investigator’s Second BetrayalDaniel lowered his weapon.

“Sofia, listen to me.”
“You moved her?”
“I transported a newborn under federal protection.”
“You knew she was mine.”
“Not at first.”
Ava stepped behind Sofia.
Daniel looked at the child.
“When I discovered your identity, Lucille already controlled the judge, hospital, and protection team.”
“So you left her?” Sofia asked.
“I changed her destination.”
“To Miriam.”
“To the only person in the network who had never harmed a child.”
Miriam remained behind the steel partition with the guards.
She shouted that Daniel was lying.
Ava whispered, “Miriam knew my name.”
Daniel nodded.
“I gave her Gabriel’s instructions. She agreed to keep Ava alive until the trust could be exposed.”
“Did she know I was alive?”
“No.”
Sofia’s anger did not lessen.
“You found me six weeks ago.”
“I found evidence that Ava remained inside the network six weeks ago. I did not know where.”
“You could have told me she existed.”
“I needed Lucille to believe you were investigating Adrian’s finances, not searching for your daughter.”
“So you used me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty struck harder than denial.
“You let me walk onto that balcony.”
“I reinforced the awning.”
“You knew Adrian might throw me.”
“I believed he would confess before he became violent.”
“You made a calculation with my body.”
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“Yes.”
Ava tightened her hand around Sofia’s dress.
Every adult in her life had used some version of protection to justify secrecy.
Sofia refused to continue the pattern.
She knelt despite the pain.
“Ava, Daniel helped keep you alive. He also kept the truth from me. Both things can be true.”
The girl looked from one adult to the other.
“Is he family?”
“No.”
“Then why does he decide things?”
Sofia stood.
“He doesn’t anymore.”
Daniel accepted the boundary.
He handed Sofia his access card and radio.
“You lead.”
A gunshot struck the shutter behind them.
Lucille’s guards were cutting through.
Elise called through the radio.
“Adrian escaped the treatment room. Lucille is moving toward the main archive.”
“What is she doing?”
“Activating the inheritance protocol.”
The Marlowe trust required Ava’s biometric confirmation before Sofia could exercise full control of Atlas Crown Tower.
Lucille had prepared a forged confirmation, but Gabriel’s system now detected the real ring and pendant in the same location.
The tower had begun transferring authority to Sofia and Ava automatically.
Lucille planned to destroy the archive before the process completed.
They moved through the lower corridor toward the server chamber.
Celia joined them near the stairwell.
When she saw Ava, she stopped.
The child recognized her from Gabriel’s recordings.
“Grandmother?”
Celia covered her mouth.
Ava approached slowly.
Unlike Sofia, Celia reached immediately.
Ava stepped back.
Celia froze and lowered her hands.
“I’m sorry.”
The restraint mattered.
Ava moved closer on her own and allowed Celia to touch the falcon pendant.
A violent explosion shook the building.
Lucille had ignited the old archive level.
Smoke filled the lower stairwell.
Elise guided them toward the river tunnel.
Sofia refused.
“The evidence is inside.”
“So are six children,” Ava said.
Sofia turned.
The other heirs remained in the classroom wing.
Lucille had locked their doors before starting the fire.
Daniel looked toward the smoke.
“We cannot reach both the archive and the children.”
Sofia handed him the recorder.
“Take Celia and Ava toward the exit.”
Ava gripped her.
“No.”
“I am coming back.”
“That is what adults say before they disappear.”
Sofia knelt.
“Then you choose. We leave together, or we help the others together.”
Ava looked toward the classroom cameras.
“Together.”
The decision changed everything.
Elise opened the emergency fire route. Sofia, Ava, Celia, Daniel, and Elise moved toward the trapped children while flames climbed behind the server walls.
On the monitor, Lucille entered the archive carrying the original Marlowe deed.
Adrian followed her with a gun.
“You lied about Ava,” he said.
Lucille turned.
“I lied about everything necessary.”
He aimed at her.
She smiled.
“You still believe you are the man holding the weapon.”
A second figure stepped from behind Adrian.
Miriam.
May you like
She pressed a gun against his back.
👉 As Sofia chose the children over the evidence, Miriam revealed she had been working directly with Lucille all along.
