Chapter 10 - The Mother Ava RememberedMiriam ordered Adrian to drop the gun.
He obeyed slowly.
Lucille opened the archive vault.
Inside were paper deeds, encrypted drives, guardianship records, and the original medical files for every child held by the institute.
Miriam glanced toward the classroom wing.
“Where is Ava?”
“With Sofia,” Lucille replied.
Miriam’s composure broke.
“You promised she would never reach her.”
“I promised Ava would remain useful.”
“She is not an asset.”
Lucille looked amused.
“You finally sound like a mother.”
Miriam had entered Lucille’s network as a school administrator. Daniel later recruited her to protect Ava, but Lucille discovered the arrangement and threatened to expose Miriam’s role in three illegal placements.
For years, Miriam served both sides.
She protected Ava where she could.
She also delivered the child whenever Lucille demanded.
Ava had memories of bedtime stories and birthday cakes with Miriam.
She also had memories of being coached to fear Sofia.
Love and control had occupied the same home.
In the classroom wing, Sofia found the first locked door.
The wedding ring opened it.
Two children rushed into the corridor. Elise and Daniel led them toward the tunnel while Sofia and Ava continued.
Smoke thickened.
Ava knew the floor plan better than any adult.
“This way.”
She guided Sofia through a hidden study room and opened the remaining doors using codes she had memorized during “trust lessons.”
Each child wore a falcon pendant, but only Ava’s contained Gabriel’s security key.
Lucille had unknowingly made the child she intended to control capable of dismantling the entire institute.
At the final classroom, the door would not open.
A boy approximately ten years old stood behind the glass with smoke rising around him.
Sofia struck the panel.
Ava entered another code.
Rejected.
“The lock belongs to Miriam,” she said.
Sofia used the radio.
“Miriam, release Classroom Six.”
Static answered.
Then Miriam’s voice came through.
“Is Ava with you?”
“Yes.”
“Let me speak to her.”
Sofia handed over the radio.
Ava hesitated.
“Miriam?”
“My sweet girl.”
“Did you know Sofia was alive?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“Did you know she thought I died?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Lucille would have taken you somewhere worse.”
“You always say there was somewhere worse.”
Miriam began crying.
“I loved you.”
Ava’s face tightened.
“Then open the door.”
Miriam entered her override.
Classroom Six released.
The boy ran into Sofia’s arms.
A gunshot sounded through the radio.
Miriam gasped.
Ava screamed her name.
Lucille’s voice replaced hers.
“Love has made every adult in this building inefficient.”
The connection ended.
Elise forced open the river-tunnel exit.
Federal rescue boats approached through the rain. Daniel transferred the children to agents one by one.
No one knew whether Miriam was alive.
Sofia refused to leave before recovering the archive.
Ava stood beside her.
“You said we choose together.”
“The children are safe now.”
“Then we save the truth.”
Celia tried to stop them.
Sofia looked at her mother.
“If we leave the records, Lucille can rebuild this with different rooms and different children.”
Daniel joined them despite Sofia’s earlier rejection.
“I know the archive route.”
“You follow my decisions.”
“Yes.”
They returned through the smoke.
Inside the vault corridor, Adrian lay bleeding from the leg but conscious. Miriam was gone.
Lucille stood behind a steel door holding the Marlowe deed.
Adrian reached toward Sofia.
“She took the recorder.”
Sofia checked Daniel’s hand.
The recorder was missing.
Someone had removed it during the rescue.
Ava touched her pendant.
“The recording copied here when the ring activated.”
Lucille heard her.
