Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Arrived Instead of PoliceDaniel closed the concealed door behind them.

The surveillance room was narrow, windowless, and colder than the balcony. Rows of monitors covered one wall. Steel cabinets held recording equipment, medical supplies, and sealed evidence containers.

Sofia tried to stand.

Her knees collapsed.

Daniel caught her before she struck the floor.

“Your left shoulder may be dislocated. Your fingers need immediate treatment.”

“Later.”

“You may have internal bleeding.”

“And Adrian may erase everything before an ambulance reaches me.”

Daniel did not argue.

He helped her into a chair and wrapped gauze around her hands. Sofia stared at the largest monitor.

Lucille stood inside the penthouse with Adrian.

“You told me the cameras were invisible,” Adrian hissed.

“They were invisible to you.”

“You knew?”

“I knew Gabriel Marlowe never trusted us.”

Sofia leaned toward the screen.

Gabriel was her father.

A structural engineer who had designed Atlas Crown Tower’s reinforced maintenance system before dying in a warehouse fire.

Lucille’s words suggested he had suspected the Voss family years before Sofia married Adrian.

One of the security men examined the blood on the balcony.

Lucille spoke calmly.

“You attempted to stop Sofia from jumping. She clawed your hands. The railing was wet. She fell before you could save her.”

Adrian stared at her.

“The camera recorded everything.”

“Then we recover the recording.”

“The shutters trapped me.”

“Which means Sofia had help.”

Lucille looked directly toward the bronze falcon.

“Daniel Cross,” she said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She knows you,” Sofia whispered.

“She knew the man I used to be.”

Daniel had introduced himself to Sofia six weeks earlier as an independent fraud investigator. He claimed Adrian’s company, Voss Meridian, had laundered money through luxury construction projects.

He never mentioned Lucille.

He never mentioned Gabriel.

Sofia turned toward him.

“What did you do for her?”

“I investigated your father’s death.”

“You told me you worked financial crimes.”

“I did. Before that, I was a homicide detective.”

“Did you close his case?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

Sofia tried to rise again.

Pain exploded through her side.

“You signed the report calling his death accidental.”

“I signed a report based on evidence Lucille’s people manufactured.”

“That doesn’t change the signature.”

“No.”

Lucille opened a cabinet beside the penthouse fireplace. Inside was a duplicate control panel Sofia had never seen.

She entered a code.

The monitors in the surveillance room flickered.

Daniel crossed to the server wall.

“She’s trying to seize the building network.”

“Can she erase the camera?”

“Not without the encryption token.”

“Where is it?”

He looked toward Sofia’s chest.

“The recorder.”

Sofia tightened her grip around the black device.

Before Adrian attacked her, she had hidden it beneath her dress. It stored the falcon camera’s encrypted transmission, but the file could not be opened without a second physical key.

Daniel pointed toward Sofia’s wedding ring.

The platinum band contained a microscopic data chip installed by Gabriel’s engineering company years before Adrian bought it from an estate jeweler.

“My father made my wedding ring?”

“He made twelve security tokens disguised as ordinary objects. Adrian unknowingly placed one on your hand.”

Sofia stared at the ring.

She remembered Lucille insisting Adrian buy it from a particular private collection.

Perhaps the purchase had not been accidental.

Daniel connected the recorder to an isolated computer.

A red warning appeared.

SECONDARY TOKEN REQUIRED.

Sofia lifted her injured hand.

The ring was gone.

It must have slipped from her finger when Adrian crushed her hand against the railing.

On the monitor, something glittered near the balcony edge.

Adrian saw it too.

He stepped toward the ring.

Lucille grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t touch it.”

“What is it?”

“The reason Gabriel chose your wife.”

Sofia looked at Daniel.

“Chose me for what?”

Before he could answer, Lucille spoke from the penthouse.

“Sofia was never supposed to become your wife, Adrian.”

Her son’s face changed.

“You arranged the marriage.”

“I arranged proximity.”

“To her?”

“To the inheritance inside her bloodline.”

Daniel shut off the audio.

Sofia seized his sleeve.

“Turn it back on.”

“We need to move.”

“I want to hear what she says.”

“You won’t hear anything if Lucille floods this room with halon gas.”

A warning light illuminated above the steel door.

The ventilation system reversed.

A chemical hiss came from the ceiling.

Daniel grabbed the recorder, wrapped Sofia in an emergency blanket, and pulled her toward a floor hatch.

As he opened it, the main monitor displayed the elevator lobby.

Three uniformed police officers finally arrived.

Lucille met them at the door and handed their commander a document.

The officer read it, looked toward the sealed balcony, and holstered his weapon.

Instead of arresting Adrian, he ordered his men to search for Sofia.

👉 The first officers reaching the penthouse were already following Lucille’s orders, while Sofia’s own wedding ring held the key to her family’s stolen inheritance.
