Jameson believed she did.

Ruby met Victor in a glass office downtown with her lawyer, Denise Carter, beside her.
Victor was a thick-necked man in a tailored suit who smiled like debt was a sport.
“Your husband is in trouble,” he said.
Ruby folded her hands.
“I know.”
“He told me you were coming to settle.”
“No.”
Victor’s smile faded.
“I’m listening.”
Ruby slid a folder across the table.
“I’m not paying his debt.”
“I’m buying it.”
Victor laughed.
Then stopped when Denise opened the purchase agreement.
Ruby had done her homework.
Jameson’s loan was already in default.
Victor wanted fast cash.

Ruby thought of Emma asleep in her crib.
She thought of Jameson’s lies.
She thought of Brooke’s name.

Then she said, “Because if I simply pay it, he learns nothing.”
Victor leaned back.
“And if you own it?”
Ruby’s voice was calm.
“Then he answers to me.”
The assignment was signed by noon.
By 2:00 p.m., Ruby’s company legally held Jameson’s $150,000 debt, the default rights, the personal guarantee, and the leverage attached to every lie he had placed on paper.
Denise warned her.
“This will end your marriage if he is as foolish as you think.”
Ruby looked through the office window at the city below.
“No.”
“If he is as foolish as I think, he already ended it.”
That evening, Jameson kissed her forehead and said, “Thank you for saving me.”
