PART 8
Ruby did not sleep in a hotel.
That was what Jameson expected.
He thought she would call crying.
He thought Emma would miss her crib.
He thought one night away would soften her.
Instead, Ruby drove to the small blue house she had rented two weeks earlier under her maiden name.
It had a fenced yard.
A yellow bedroom for Emma.
A kitchen table with two chairs.
A camera doorbell.
And locks Jameson had never touched.
Emma ran straight to the room with the cloud wallpaper and gasped.
“Mine?”
Ruby sat on the floor and pulled her close.
“Yes.”
“Yours.”
That night, after Emma fell asleep clutching the pink bunny Ruby had rescued from the driveway, Ruby sat at the kitchen table with Denise on speaker.
The legal plan moved quickly.
Divorce filing.
Emergency custody request.
Financial preservation order.
Debt enforcement notice.
Asset freeze motion.
Police report supplement regarding unlawful exclusion from the home.
Demand letter for return of personal property, including the robe.
Ruby laughed at that last one.
Then cried.
Denise heard both and said nothing for a while.
Finally, Ruby whispered, “I feel stupid.”
Denise’s voice softened.
“For trusting your husband?”
“For thinking love could make him decent.”
“That is not stupidity.”
“What is it?”
“Hope.”
Ruby wiped her face.
“Hope is expensive.”
“Yes.”
“That is why we protect what remains.”
The next morning, Jameson called twenty-six times.
Ruby answered none.
Eliana left a voicemail.
You are destroying this family over pride.
Ruby saved it for court.
Brooke sent a message from an unknown number.
I didn’t know he was married like that.
Ruby stared at the words.
Married like that.
As if vows had categories.
She deleted the message after sending it to Denise.
By afternoon, Jameson’s lender file became part of the divorce record.
By evening, the court granted temporary restraints preventing him from selling, moving, pledging, or hiding assets.
By the next day, his business partner called Ruby directly.
“I think Jameson forged my initials on one of the debt exhibits.”
Ruby closed her eyes.
The debt was not the end.

It was the door.
