The police arrived before the locksmith.
That saved Jameson from making one more criminal mistake.
Two officers walked up the driveway as Ruby stepped outside with Emma and the suitcase.
Jameson followed her, furious and confused.
Eliana came behind him in her pink robe, shouting that Ruby was trying to steal the child.
Brooke lingered near the doorway, still wrapped in stolen silk.
The first officer lifted one hand.
“Everyone stop where you are.”
Jameson pointed at Ruby.
“She’s taking my daughter.”
Ruby held Emma closer.
“I am leaving a residence after being ordered out by my husband, while his mistress remains inside wearing my clothing.”
The officer blinked once.
Professional.
But human.
The second officer looked toward Brooke.
Brooke pulled the robe tighter.
Eliana shouted, “That woman is unstable!”
Ruby said, “I have already contacted my attorney.”
As if summoned by the sentence, Denise’s black sedan pulled up at the curb.
She stepped out in a navy suit with a folder under one arm and a look that made Eliana lower her voice without knowing why.
Denise walked directly to the officers.
“I represent Ruby Vale.”
She handed over copies.
“Emergency domestic property notice.”
“Child safety statement.”
“And formal notice of secured debt ownership against Jameson Vale.”
Jameson laughed.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Denise turned to him.
“Everything.”
A tow truck pulled up next.
Then a process server.
Then a security contractor hired by the creditor.
Jameson’s confidence began to crack.
Ruby stood near the driveway with Emma on her hip and watched the life he built on her exhaustion start folding inward.
Denise pointed to the mansion.
“Mr. Vale, the loan you defaulted on has been assigned to my client’s company.”
“You pledged certain interests and household assets under the personal guarantee.”
“You also triggered default by attempting to transfer occupancy and exclude the creditor’s owner from secured premises.”
Jameson stared at Ruby.
“You paid it.”
Ruby shook her head.
“No.”
“I bought it.”
Brooke whispered, “What does that mean?”
Ruby looked at her robe.
