PART 7

Jameson dropped to his knees when he saw the notice on the front door.

Not out of remorse.

Out of math.

That was when Ruby knew the marriage was truly dead.

He looked at the notice.

Then the officers.

Then the process server.

Then Ruby.

His face crumpled.

“Ruby, wait!”

“Please don’t leave!”

The neighbors had begun stepping outside.

Mrs. Alvarez from next door stood near her mailbox.

A teenage boy across the street filmed until his mother slapped the phone down.

Eliana shouted, “Get up, Jameson!”

But Jameson stayed on his knees.

He finally understood.

The house was not being seized that second.

But Ruby now held the debt that could force a sale, freeze assets, demand repayment, expose the fraudulent pledge, and unwind the transfers he planned to make after pushing her out.

He had not escaped Victor Hale.

He had handed himself to Ruby.

Ruby stopped near the caution tape.

“First, take off my robe.”

Brooke flinched.

Ruby looked at Jameson.

“Second, I own the debt now.”

Brooke’s voice cracked.

“What does that mean?”

Denise answered.

“It means the person you thought had been drained is now the secured creditor.”

Jameson reached toward Ruby’s ankle.

The officer stepped in.

“Sir, step back from her and the child.”

Jameson pulled his hand away.

“Ruby, I was angry.”

Ruby looked at him.

“You packed your mistress into my bedroom.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You made a plan.”

Eliana pointed at Ruby.

“You vindictive little—”

The second officer turned sharply.

“Ma’am, stop.”

Eliana stopped.

Ruby looked at Jameson one last time.

“You didn’t use me.”

“You signed yourself away.”

Then she walked past him.

Emma lifted her head and looked back at the mansion.

“Home?”

Ruby kissed her hair.

“Not anymore, baby.”

Her voice almost broke.

But it did not.

Because leaving was not losing.

Not this time.

Behind her, Jameson stared at the driveway where his daughter’s toys lay scattered like the pieces of a family he had treated as disposable.

And for the first time, no one moved to clean up his mess.
